There is no question that the humour works better than the emotion in Good Newwz, but director Raj Mehta and his writers do make room to raise pertinent questions about whether men can truly understand and empathise what women go through with regards to pregnancy and childbirth. It asks us also to ponder the very meaning of what makes a parent. These are progressive ideas, and theyre frequently in conflict with the films otherwise conservative outlook. Im going with three out of five for Good Newwz. Theres a lot to enjoy in the film despite its bumps. I havent laughed this hard in weeks. Not a bad way to end the year.

On the whole, GOOD NEWWZ is a sure-fire hit. Smart writing, fantastic humour and heartfelt emotions are the three pillars of this well-made film. The fourth pillar being the performances of its principal cast. At the boxoffice, 2019 is sure to conclude with a big winner, bringing cheer and joy in this festive season. GOOD NEWWZ will live up to its title and bring good news for its investors.

On the whole, Good Newwz is a sureshot hit. It will easily join the Rs. 100-crore club soon and will keep everyone (public, producers, distributors and exhibitors) happy. The film has already recovered almost the entire investment in it from non-theatrical revenues and hence almost the entire theatrical shares from India and Overseas will be profit.

Featuring a quartet of pretty people whose fate gets entangled in the ovaries of two childless women, the film revels in swimming in mediocrity. It strives hard to be funny but is never more than mildly amusing. Good Newwz banks on the belief that its audience will take all its drawbacks in their stride and warm up to the tedium that it shovels out of its womb for whatever it is worth. It is all arguably done in good humour, but there are elements in the film that is at variance with the modern worldview that its principal characters are meant to convey. Besides perpetuating the myth of motherhood being the be all and end all of a woman’s life, Good Newwz peddles egregiously regressive notions about gender roles in marriage, divisions of class and education, and the nature versus nurture conflict.

Just going by the fairly novel premise, I have to hand it to Good Newzz: so refreshing to have something so out-of-the-box (another word for risky) come out of an industry whose default option is to play safe by churning out tired, jaded sequels of tired, jaded super-starry vehicles. The film works best when it is being its bawdy, silly, raucous self. It dips when it veers towards bring-out-the-hankies emotion bowing to the dictum of how can a Bollywood film not make you laugh and cry at the same time.

Through much of its runtime, director Raj Mehta ensures that ‘Good Newwz’ stays true to its genre with several light-hearted and funny moments. Add to that, the pace of the film stays mostly tight. Although given the subject and premise the narrative, at times, treads into a problematic zone and stance. And some of the jokes seem off-colour. Theres also a tendency to over explain and simplify in some portions which stick out. Also, the screenplay barely scratches the surface when it comes to getting into the depth and complexity of the situation. At the heart of it, ‘Good Newwz’ is a light and breezy comedy and certainly makes for an entertaining watch.

All said and done, Good Newwz is a pain-in-your-stomach laugh riot from the word go. Its a complete package of fun, smart, entertainment & emotions. It will enjoy a tremendous repeat-value ending up a comedy thats watched on television even years later.

Lets give you the good news first– Good Newwz, a light-hearted urbane comedy that involves Varun Batra (Akshay Kumar) his wife Dipti (Kareena Kapoor Khan) plus Honey (Diljit Dosanjh) and Monika Batra (Kiara Advani), comes like a breath of fresh air after a spate of actioners and small-town India stories. An urbane comedy with the fresh subject of a pregnancy switcheroo, Good Newwz may well be the family entertainer that city slickers opt for this weekend.

The surge in Hindi films addressing ‘taboo’ subjects, particularly those starring Akshay Kumar and Ayushmann Khurrana, have often toed the fine line between entertainment and preaching. Kumar’s latest film, Raj Mehta’s dramedy Good Newwz is the perfect blend of both, given it comes from a place of sheer conviction and embracing all tropes of meaningful entertainment. To say Good Newwz is a smart sociopolitical commentary on class would be a slight exaggeration. But it truly is an accurate, evolving into ideal, representation of our social zeitgeist.
