GROWN UPS 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:1/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:Masand’s Verdict (CNN IBN)

As someone who didn’t hate the earlier ‘Grown Ups’ film even I have to admit that this sequel is a lazy, putrid comedy that appears to have been made only so Sandler and his friends could get more rich. Unlike the 2010 film, which had some genuinely funny portions because Sandler and his co-actors appeared to be enjoying themselves flexing their comic chops and coming up with what looked like impromptu jokes, this one feels insincere…nobody’s even making an effort here. I’m going with one out of five. Please God, let there not be a Grown Ups 3.

But these moments of insight are rare. Instead what we get are pee, burp, vomit jokes one of the characters can do a burp-snart, which is a combination of burp, sneeze and fart. This is actually pretty funny but the most of the film is resolutely infantile. It begins with a deer urinating in Lennys face and then running back with a bra hanging on its antlers. And its all downhill from there. Grown Ups 2 is too shoddy, lazy and low-IQ to be fun. Im going with 2 stars.

Apart from family values and sticking by your friends, scriptwriters Sandler, Herlihy and Wolf speak about a healthy appreciation for the curvaceous female form. You’re not going to watch this film looking for finesse. There are Sandler movies with far better laughs. In fact, it’s a little hard to describe this film as anything more than a bunch of grown men acting like dorks and in the process, attempting to wrangle a few gags out of situations that seem like a home video stretched to feature film length. The only thought that this film might provoke is to make you wonder what Sandler and gang were thinking when they made this.

Sandler has the same old trick of whimpers and yowls. The wives, played by Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph, have no real roles, so they are just around, sashaying and squealing for no justifiable cause. Every other dialogue has s**ist and racist jokes. This film exists as Sandlers another jab at box-office success€”which has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of writing or performance. Theres a lot of comic acting talent here€”its a pity that an actor like Steve Buscemi is so terribly wasted€”but director Dennis Dugan gets nothing out of them.
