The characters are still fun to be around, the one-liners are still sharp, and some of the action scenes are cut like glossy MTV-style music videos. But the scrappy, raggle-taggle charm of the core team of heroes has worn off this time around. Its satisfying, but it never flies. Im going with three out of five.

This is a long film and despite the inventiveness, coherence and sense of play imparted to the action sequences, some feel a tad too long simply because the results always seem inevitable. Guardians Of The Galaxy was unlike any superhero movie we’d seen before, and, in contrast, Volume 2 mirrors it rather loyally, playing off it instead of breaking new ground and standing on its own, but – as sophomore albums are bound to do – it has more to say even if we’ve heard these sounds before.

Vol. 2 also manages to surpass another nagging issue troubling the Marvel films by setting up a villain with ample depth; enough to keep us emotionally invested and breaking the chain of weaker antagonists seen before. The first film focused on bringing the group together, while this sequel makes audiences understand why the Guardians of the Galaxy are such a big deal on a cosmic level. The repercussions of their actions here will be felt on a much grander scale, setting up Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the process. Needless to say, its an absolutely essential and thoroughly enjoyable spectacle to watch

The sequel, predictably titled Volume 2 loses some of the thrilling element of surprise, but still offers satisfyingly giddy, often humorous, giant sized visual entertainment. The unending stream of wise-ass jokes is well compensated with a surprisingly poignant third act, which is in fact so effective that it elevates the Guardians as a better franchise than the Avengers.

Despite the film’s bloated structure, and its tendency to sway and get distracted now and then, Gunn still manages to pack an emotional punch in the end, delivering a character send-off that’s bound to bring most viewers to the verge of tears. But though the celestial action is grounded in relatable values, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s central message that family comes in all shapes and sizes struggles to shine through, amid the cacophony.
