Helicopter Eela stars Kajol as a woman who doesnt know the difference between mother and smother. Shes every teenagers nightmare€¦the sort of parent who doesnt respect boundaries, who doesnt understand the meaning of privacy, and whose entire life revolves around her offspring. Shes a hoverer, and hence the helicopter in the films title.Its an interesting starting point for a story, except that the story of this film doesnt go beyond the usual clich©s.A chunk of the films second half is focused on the comedy that arises out of mother and son attending class together, and while some jokes land the truth is that none of it feels particularly fresh. Thats true of the film too. Youve seen all this before€¦and done better too.Im going with two out of five

You remember Anjali Sharma the character Kajol played in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…? Shes over-animated, shrill and drop-dead gorgeous. Well, if she got older and became a single mom, she would be Eela in Helicopter Eela. Eela also has that Mrs. Raichand trait of sensing when her son is near. So just like Jaya Bachchan turns to the door in K3G before Shah Rukh Khan walks in, Eela opens the door even before her son, Vivaan has knocked. But what was the ultimate proof of maa ka pyaar in 2001 has become a sign of smothering in 2018.

The problem with Helicopter Eela is that it allows the drama to trump its comic potential. A little more wit and humour and a little less earnestness might have given the film the wings it wants. After a disappointingly predictable and patchy two hours, the climax, too, does little to help the audience forget the trudge up until this point.To sum up, Helicopter Eela is an ungainly crash landing at the end of a wobbly ride.

A doting mum and her resigned-to-it son are the focus of Helicopter Eela, in which said Eela helicopters around Vivaan to the extent of smothering him. Will they grow up and out of each other? This is a Bollywood movie, so that question is redundant. But the answer, which unravels over two and half excessively long hours, is so devoid of interest, that you feel like shutting down almost as soon as the film starts.

The idea of Kajol being too boisterous for a library is easy to accept, and the actor takes the role seriously enough to make Eela believable. The film doesnt work as hard, with college students using volumes of the World Book for research, and a young man with a thickly Bengali accent playing Eelas half-Maharashtrian, half-Punjabi son. In a throwback to Kuch Kuch Hota Hais infamously unplugged electric guitars, Kajol even conquers a stadium with a song without needing a microphone. This Mommy may not know best, but she sure knows loudest.

In the second half, director Pradeep Sarkar often comes close to giving wings to his protagonist, but that doesnt happen till the very end. During this half, the mother joins the son in college and theres ample opportunity for comedy, but that doesnt ever play out. While the mother-son conflict is the core of the story, their confrontational scenes become a tad too repetitive. Overall, Helicopter Eela is a fun ride that manages to land safely despite some turbulence. Watch this simple and endearing tale of motherly love with your mom in tow.

There are some loose ends in the film that mar its narrative. The conflicts between the son and mother resolve conveniently and Kajol gets her big live performance in the climax. The film falls into all the Bollywood trappings and seems inconsistent at times. In the end, Helicopter Eela is a well-intentional, popcorn Bollywood masala family film that will leave you with a smile.

While the first half moves at a languid pace, its the second half that picks up pace. The conflict between the mother and son reaches a breaking point and its engaging to watch them navigate those tricky terrains. But what lets the movie down is the simplistic manner in which the movie explores the life of a single mother. Even at the end of the movie, its unclear what Eela did for a living to make her ends meet. Even if we assume that her estranged husband left her a tiny fortune, the math of living in a costly city in India does not just match up.The problems in this film are resolved in a pedestrian and simplistic manner. Eelas journey of self-discovery is hasty and not wholly believable.
