Hotel Mumbai isnt cheap or exploitative in its recreation of the tragedy. Yet it never goes beyond the obvious. The truth is that watching live news broadcasts of the hotel burning, and of guests escaping through windows and exits were far more horrific than any film that attempts to duplicate it. The events of 26/11 left many of us permanently scarred. Itll take an extremely smart, sensitive, and insightful film to help us make any sense of it. Im going with two-and-a-half out of five for Hotel Mumbai. This is not that film.

Hotel Mumbai lands enough emotional punches. The scale and extent of the tragedy is too vast to leave you unmoved. I just wish that the film didnt insist on a patriotic slant at the end or tell us that Mumbai bounced back in two days it feels like an empty assertion. There was enough heroism and humanity on display during the attacks to give us hope for a better tomorrow.

‘Hotel Mumbai’ is a gripping, nerve-wrecking and emotionally draining watch. And as the film releases in India close to the date of the actual terrorist attacks (eleven years ago), it risks triggering horrifying memories and re-opening emotional wounds. But at the same time, it also reminds us of the extraordinary courage of the ordinary people.

Hotel Mumbai is also unsparing about the incompetence of the authorities who could have stopped this tragedy from achieving the scale it did €” the special forces which kept a city waiting, the police that struggled for reinforcements, the TV cameras that gave away vital clues, the government that failed to stop them.

The movie captures most vividly how a wonderful holiday for some of the hotel guests turned from a dream into a nightmare. Also, the bravery on the part of some of the hotel employees who could have easily escaped but stayed on to help and save the guests is highlighted with a sense of authenticity. The staffers are not depicted as some sort of Spidermen or larger-than-life film heroes. And herein lies Hotel Mumbai’s plus point.

Hotel Mumbai, helmed by Anthony Maras, an Australian director of award-winning short films, falls somewhere between those two extreme possibilities. Mercifully so. The taut and gripping film steers clear of conventional thriller tics to present a restrained ringside view of the manic mayhem that ten terrorists unleashed in the city in the last week of November 2008

Hotel Mumbai isn’t an easy watch, it’s jolting and discomforting, but it’s good to see an attempt that doesn’t feel like propaganda or manipulation. It’s a piece of work that will continue to remind us what Mumbai went through that night, and why it came back to its feet within three days. It also reminded us that Mumbai is a city that can be shaken, but never shackled.
