Despite everyones best intentions, and the saving graces, also known as the efforts of the actors, trying to bring life into an otherwise aimless drama, the film starts failing from the writing department, all the way up to the final executed product. This, when it had the potential to become something way bigger.

Hurdang is a movie that is all consumed by its problematic messaging. It lacks nuance, and enough research hasn’t been done on the agitation staged by the students of Allahabad in 1990. It does not delve into why the Mandal Commission was implemented in the first place and fails to recognise the importance of the reservation. Instead, it’s a privilege, upper-class person’s rant against the so-called discrimination they will be facing if the plan comes into force.

HURDANG PLOT

Hurdang is a love drama set against the backdrop of the student agitation of 1990 in Allahabad. It is 1990. Allahabad. The story opens at a time where anti mandal protestors are being brought in a police chowky. There is no space in the chowky so all the students are shoved in a small room with a toilet. Amidst the sloganeering and cheering, DADDU, a 24-year-old student, looks completely out of place.
