This film isnt about the victims, though. Its refreshing to see little to no moral policing about the strippers and why they need to do what they do. If theres any judgement, its directed towards the men the wolves of Wall Street, who, as Ramona reasons, deserved to have their money stolen. Director Lorene Scafaria approaches Hustlers like a gender-reversed mobster heist, complete with elaborate montages. However, the narrative tends to get repetitive, to the point of being excessive. This affects the pacing and tonality, which arent as focused as they need to be. Despite the best efforts of Lopez, theres a lot of glamour but not enough depth required to make this a memorable film, but maybe just enough for a night out.

The blend of realism and theatrics in Hustlers pulsates with life. It yields a witty and no-holds-barred examination of frailty and simplicity on one hand and strength and guile on the other. The film’s in-your-face physicality is leavened with generous dashes of humour.Hustlers is embellished with a lively, foot-tapping soundtrack that features the likes of Britney Spears, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Sean Kingston, Fiona Apple and Usher (who puts in an appearance designed to bring the house down) alongside a bunch of Chopin etudes. The restless camera is always on the move, imparting to the film a staccato, montage-like feel that serves to enhance the energy inherent in Scafaria’s treatment of the narrative. Highly recommended.

Directed by Lorene Scafaria who is known for her comedy-drama, Hustlers is completely different. The film at start intends to be an all-revealing crime story based on true events but it secretly becomes a story about sisterhood, jealousy, and betrayal. What makes the film work is how Lorene balances the two aspects of the story, the crime world and the drama between Dorothy and Ramona without overpowering either. Sadly what doesn’t work is how while presenting a 2000s story Hustlers becomes a 2000s film.

The repetitive nature of showcasing the gangs con also gets tiresome after a point, as the film constantly shifts, in unappealing edit patterns, from the strip club to Ramonas plush apartment. It all ends on an unsatisfying, anti-climactic note. It does feel as if the film was too scared to take a truly deep dive into the real life case. We are left with little to no understanding of any of the women in the film, except for the formulaic and unemotional narrative of Dorothy being a single mother and an immigrant. While still an overall enjoyable movie, it is important to regard the biggest takeaway that mere representation does not automatically mean great cinema.
