INTO THE STORM MOVIE REVIEW

We’ve seen disaster films involving extra-terrestrials, tsunamis and various other natural (destructive) phenomena in recent times. So, it’s only fitting that we get a film that shows us the kind of devastation thundering tornadoes can wreak. While Twister (1996) was the last film of note to deal with this subject, Into the Storm utilises today’s entire palette of VFX wizardry as well as plenty of first-person points-of-view shots to convey the same thrills, on a far more grandiose scale. So, if you get your jollies watching houses, cars and even a bunch of passenger planes flung into the air like toys, you might like this.

It works wonderfully when theres judicious use of VFX to enhance the story-telling and vivid imagination. But some prefer to solely rely on the competence of computer-generated fakery, which cannot conceal their own creative complacence. The mostly average tornado spectacle, Into The Storm, falls in the latter bracket. Visually, it offers quite a sensational depiction of multiple tornadoes hitting a fictional Midwest town, Silverton. But where plotlines and performances are concerned, its distressingly sloppy.

Placing its action firmly within Oklahoma, and feet solidly into territory earlier explored by 1996s Twister, this film exists to batter, to impress and, against its grain, to make a feeble human connection. On the first two aspects, Into The Storm succeeds. However, this film is seriously and only into the storm. Everything else just has to make way.

Unfortunately, the storm gets very little focus in the film, leaving viewers disappointed. In fact, the chaos doesnt even begin until a third of the film is already over. The calm before the storm lasts way too long for Into the Storm to have the desired effect. Into the Storm is the film for everyone who enjoys end-of-the-world movies. The visuals are noteworthy, albeit criminally underused. Additionally, Into the Storm tries to do something unconventional with a tried-and-tested premise and succeeds to an extent.
