JAI HO! DEMOCRACY MOVIE REVIEW BY TOP CRITICS
Even if the idea is to underscore diplomatic futility against the common man’s resourcefulness, the diluted sarcasm and its utopian resolutions fail to convey the sting of callous reality. At best, Jai Ho! Democracy is a hasty uptake of news channels and papers drawn into a skit that’s too short on subtext to be a realised satire and too silly to be taken seriously.

Satire needs nuance: Jai Ho Democracy drowns in obviousness. This, coming from Ranjit Kapoor, is a disappointment. The intention is fine, but the treatment is far from. And it criminally wastes an array of good actors: Kapoor, Puri, Hussain, Biswas, Bashir raise their decibel with zero impact. Theres a Mayawati-like character who is made fun of, and we smile, but shes gone too soon. As is the point of this film.

Ranjit Kapoor is a brilliant writer, no doubt. As a filmmaker, he is not too successful in extracting that stagey quality from the material which most of us refer to see as the rang-manch of life.But when it comes to cinema, we would want the boorish banter and the endless ennui of Indian politics to seem a little less tedious than this.After all Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court is about the monotony of legal proceedings. But it never falls prey to the affliction that it describes.

Sadly, a good idea is not enough. Barring the political mudslinging, which is quite believable and a few wisecracks, the film lacks good writing. With a talented cast at its disposal (Annu Kapoor in particular is outstanding) and even a decent plot, it’s a shame that the film fails to capitalise on either. The script loses steam eventually, making the director resort to bizarre slapstick comedy and a farfetched climax.

The tension between the Indian and Pakistan armies, which is the pivot upon which Jai Ho! Democracy is balanced, is rooted in reality. However, its characters are over-the-top, juvenile buffoons who are constantly complicating the problems they are supposed to solve. That said, the satire is not particularly nuanced, profound or even consistently funny, but its still impressive because the film is just wicked enough.

JAI HO DEMOCRACY is his second film as a director after the forgettable CHINTUJI. The film starts off on an extremely good note. Just when the film is settling down with the script and the viewers, the film starts lagging big time, so much so that it becomes irrational and irritating beyond a point. While the film’s writers had a unique idea, the end product suffers heavily because of bad direction and editing. While the film’s first half is (somehow) bearable, the film’s second half starts testing your patience. On the whole, JAI HO DEMOCRACY is an average film that can be skipped.
