On the whole, Rajini The Jailer is too lengthy and also boring after a point of time. As such, it will not be able to do much at the Hindi box-office. Of course, the original Tamil version has the superstardom of Rajinikanth as its biggest asset and despite the fact that fans of Tamil cinema and of Rajinikanth will not find the film very entertaining, it will still manage to do decent business because of the tremendous advance booking and the entertaining first half.

The film, like several Rajinikanth movies in the past, lacks logic. The dark comedy works well in the original language (Tamil) and for those who are familiar with Nelson’s previous films. But since it is not everyones cup of tea, the jokes may get lost in translation in other languages.(Even though you have aged, your style and charm has not left you). Twenty four years later, we can still safely say the same about Rajini in Jailer. But, that may not be enough to save this film.

Jailer is a film that celebrates the film industry at its core.Jailer is Rajinikanths return to form. Even at 72, his charisma and style make you scream in theatres.Jailer is a film that celebrates Rajinikanth for what he is. There are sparks of Nelsons intelligence in Jailer which makes it quite enjoyable.

Jailer promises loads of action and fun-filled moments that any ardent fan of the Superstar could ask for. Everything that Rajini does in Jailer is targeted at his fans. While the star does not miss a trick, director Nelson makes the mistake of not working enough on the screenplay. Working with a weak plot riddled with holes and convenient twists that one can see from miles away. The film is mediocre. Thalaivar isnt!

By the end of first half, Jailer had all the elements to become Rajini’s all time best movies. However, the pace slacks and settles to a decent watch worthy movie by the time it reaches the climax.

With Jailer, the original superstar proves that he’s still the tiger of the jungle as he roars through this Nelson directorial, beating the bad guys to pulp, something that was missing in most of his earlier films. After a long time, you get to see an interestingly cast anti-hero in the badass looking Vinayan and an equally ruthless Rajinikanth in a never-seen-before violent avatar.Anirudh’s racy BGM and a whole bunch of star cameos ensure you don’t have much time to think about logic or relevance of the plot.

On the whole, Jailer is a partially engaging action drama that relies majorly on the performance and style of Rajinikanth. Superstar was stunning in his role, and the movie has a nice first half. But Jailer suffers from a wafer-thin plot, and the second half fell like a pack of cards. Hence Jailer ends up being just an okay watch, and it is suggested to keep your expectations in check.

The movie has several goosebumps moments, and Nelson crafted it to perfection. Coming to the technical side, Anirudh’s music is the biggest backbone. He elevates Rajini’s action scenes to the next level. Even a casual walking scene gets lots of whistles and howlings due to his BGM. Vijay Kartik Kannan’s frames are perfect. The lighting and the color tone sets the mood of the scene naturally. Action scenes are brilliantly choreographed. Art director Kiran gets another notable mention for his realistic set work.Overall, A Repeat Worthy Blockbuster

Overall, Jailer has an engaging first half with a perfect interval block. It turns rocky in the second half and fails to take things to the next level post-intermission. Still, it is a decent outing and makes for a one-time watch for Rajinis star presence and the initial hour and a half.
