Jalsa is a gripping and unsettling dissection of morality, motherhood, money, class and the myriad ways in which people compromise. Even those who claim to be champions of the truth. Director Suresh Triveni, who earlier made the amiable Tumhari Sulu, moves into harsher territory. Jalsa is the story of a grotesque hit-and-run accident. The aftermath alters the life of the victim, the driver and everyone around them. It peels the veneer of civility, revealing the rot within.

Prajwal Chandrashekar and Suresh Triveni have written a story which has a lot of intrigue value. The duos screenplay is a bit long-drawn because of which the drama becomes slow at places. However, the unfolding drama keeps the audience guessing and, therefore, involved. There are some moments of tension and some twists and turns which keep the viewers guessing about what would follow. The climax is very interesting and scares the daylights out of the audience. On the whole, Jalsa has an intriguing story and wonderful performances to make for interesting OTT viewing.

With a runtime of a little over two hours, Jalsa, a captivating drama with a complex moral center, keeps you on the edge of your seat for most part of the film. This ones a must watch, all the more for its terrific climax.

Jalsa gets its title from a trajectory you cant even guess without watching the movie. It is a filmmaker evolving and two of the most prolific actors exploring their craft and maybe surprising their own selves as well. And the process churns out a film not just fresh but also an example of how a noir can be made differently.

Jalsas first half is long and takes a while to pick up the pace. Triveni gets carried away in certain scenes where too much time is spent in telling parallel stories. The way the climax unfolds and the case reaches its final outcome is not fully convincing either. But if you look beyond these flaws, Jalsa is a terrific watch. The way the logic behind the title of the film hits you, is also a reason why Triveni is so good at his craft.

Especially noteworthy is the climax, which hinges on a crisis that is precipitated by an innocuous act. It assumes ominous proportions in the light of what has transpired between the journalist and her housemaid and the latter’s firm bonding with the differently abled boy under her charge. In keeping with the control that runs through the film, the final moments, redolent with genuine emotion and beauty, are served up with remarkable restraint and efficacy.

Two Mumbai women, occupying diametrically opposite sides of the financial and social divide, are impacted by a terrible accident that takes place one night. Jalsa, which reunites the Tumhari Sulu team of director Suresh Triveni and actor Vidya Balan, for this emotional drama, has one of the most tightly-executed beginnings Ive seen recently, which develops the odd bump as the plot progresses, until it reaches a cathartic, if slightly designed end.

The entire film is a lead up to a confrontation between wrong and wronged, but when the moment finally arrives, Jalsa leaves us in the cold and to mull over the state of things.
