Much of the films strength is Saifs sharp timing, and his ability to mature convincingly when the time comes. Early on in the film he shakes a leg to an old chartbuster of his, Ole ole from a film that came out 25 years ago. Hes still got the moves, and hes definitely got the charm. Too bad the movies he makes frequently dont match up to what hes willing to bring.Im going with two-and-a-half out of five for Jawaani Jaaneman. Its funny, but only in spurts. Youll feel like youve seen this movie many times already.

Jawaani Jaaneman is an official adaptation of the 2010 Argentinian comedy Igualita A Mi which means Just Like Me. Somewhere in it is a tender, funny story about parenting, growing up, the importance of family and what a character calls old-school love. But director Nitin Kakkar only skims the surface. And yet, Jawaani Jaaneman doesnt become more than the sum of its parts. Im a big admirer of Nitins first film Filmistaan, in which he combined humor, pathos and depth with a skillful lightness. I wish Jawaani Jaaneman had delivered more.

On the whole, Jawaani Jaaneman is an entertaining fare but it is meant for a thin section of the class audiences and for some audiences of the big-city multiplexes mainly. Considering the investment by the distributors on the one hand and the poor opening on the other, it looks very unlikely that the film will be able to score despite unusual masala for the cities and classes.

Till the film focuses on Jazz and his pursuit of hedonism, it is fun. Jazz is fun. Saif Ali Khan who seems to have pulled himself out of a slump, is clearly having a blast. A little more consistency with the writing, and a re-upping of the fun-meter would have made Jawaani Jaaneman super. As it is, it is fun while it lasts.

A side-plot about a housing redevelopment project does not fit in smoothly but otherwise, Kakkar steers clear of chest-thumping melodrama and old-school moralising. The content is mostly flippant with a few meaningful moments punctuating an easy-breezy coming-of-age story about a modern Indian family.

Watch it for Saif Ali Khan’s performance, it is sure to give all the 90s kids major nostalgia, an actor who ages like fine wine and is capable of playing himself in his biopic someday. Also, watch it for Alaya F and Tabu, there are no two other actors who could have played their roles with such ease.

The film is highly entertaining in the first half when the narrative is light and breezy. The pace drops in the second half as it meanders towards predictable and slightly preachy parts. Especially, for single men who want to fly solo all their life. But in the end, ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ comes out a winner with its non-judgmental approach and a contemporary story that showcases complex human relationships with all its quirks, firmly in place.

All said and done, Jawaani Jaaneman not only ensures making you laugh but also is backed by some heartwarming moments. An easy recommendation, go in without any expectation & youll like it more. Three and a half stars!

While Saif does a great job to hold the proceedings together with his signature goofy act, sadly that’s all the movie offers up. There are definitely moments that make you laugh out loud but the comedy is not even throughout. Watch this one only if you are a huge fan of Saif’s or want a time-pass movie with some erratic laughs at the theatre.

While this relationship drama will fuel the disturbing narrative that its up to women to straighten out immature men and that a man can be happy only if he ticks the conventional boxes of marriage and family, theres no denying the fun thats waiting to be had in this film. Dont be shy to put a ring on this film.
