Jordaar concept, but kamzor writing… Screenplay of convenience… #RanveerSingh sparkles, but the amateurish goings-on play spoilsport. #JayeshbhaiJordaarReview

Ranveer Singh is a firecracker when it comes to performances and screen presence but the script douses his fire. For the longest time Hindi films have worshiped alpha males. Divyang hopes to turn that template around and question false bravado through his timid but determined hero. He also tries to take a light-hearted look at grim issues, but uninspiring writing lets his film down by a mile.

Ranveer Singhs arresting presence and investment in his character cannot save Jayeshbhai Jordaar from its writing and direction, both of which feature none of the jor contained in its title.

First things first, for a film to pick this up in order to hammer it down as a pernicious, illegal practice which should never have existed in the first place, it needs to figure out exactly which tone it wants to adopt. Jocular, matter-of-fact, pointed, or deliberately leaving a loophole for the guilty to crawl out of? Fearing it would turn out too much of a documentary, as issue-based features so often are accused of, you bung in, at regular intervals, colourful characters, quirky detours, a precocious child, without realising that you are hollowing out your own films core.

But not everything in Jayeshbhai Jordaar is so tapte tawe pe paani ke chheete jaisa sizzling. Several portions are preachy. If Sanjay Dutt gave us jaadoo ki jhappi, Jayeshbhai introduces the concept of jaddoo ki pappi. But sidelining all this, the borderline dystopian world the film creates is commendable. Will Jayeshbhai Jordaar pull off a KGF or at the very least a Kashmir Files in terms of box office collection? No chance. But these are films that will touch the heart. This feel-good feeling we’re walking out of the theatre with is currency enough.

Jayesbhai Jordaar is not only unsatisfying but also poignant. The film is breezy enough at its core but despite its rousing moments, the film leaves you feeling unfulfilled. It could definitely have surely been more Jordaar.
