However, its the finale that will meet with diverse opinions. Will the conservative audiences – especially in the heartland – accept it? Was an easier way out, a more conventional finale the need of the hour? Will be interesting to see the reactions once the film releases. On the whole, JUG JUGG JEEYO is a winner. It works for varied reasons, the most important one being it balances drama, humour and emotions seamlessly. The strong emotional quotient, in the second hour especially, is one factor thats sure to attract families in hordes. Watch it with your loved ones, this ones worthy of a recommendation.

However, without a strong emotional undercurrent and some heavy-duty emotional scenes, the comedy looks lopsided. After all, divorce is a serious matter and if that cant move the viewers emotionally, no amount of comedy is going to do the trick.On the whole, Jugjugg Jeeyo has good light moments but the drama is wrongly constructed and, therefore, does not hold much water. It will not be able to do well at the ticket windows.

JugJugg Jeeyo presents a cosmetically enhanced, airbrushed version of divorce. This is inevitable because JugJugg Jeeyo is a sanitized and purposefully crowd-pleasing view of what happens between men and women. Theres enough here, including some very catchy remixed songs, that is enjoyable. I wish it had transcended to memorable.

Very broad strokes are the stock-in-trade of this film, which, of course, could go a long way in endearing it to segments of the masses. But do not expect any nuanced ideas to flow out of this battle of the sexes that loses quickly its way in a maze. As a cinematic ‘treatise’ on marriage, Jugjugg Jeeyo for the ages. Watch it. You might find it entertaining. But insightful it certainly isn’t.

Jug Jugg Jeeyo is a good movie, make no mistake of that it has enough going for it by way of both humour and emotions, making for a fairly enjoyable family entertainer. It’s just that it could’ve been even better with more assured direction, less regression, less pseudo-feminism and a background score that had no business leaving the recording studio. That being said, Varun Dhawan, Neetu Singh, Maniesh Paul and above all, the legendary Anil Kapoor make it worth the trip to a theatre at least once. I’m going with 3 out of 5 stars.

At the heart of it, Jug Jugg Jeeyo is all about saving a marriage and realising that making a compromise and keeping your self-respect are two different conversations. Despite how deep the subjects might be, director Raj Mehta manages to use humour, sarcasm and wit to keep the proceedings light and engaging. Just like all marriages, the film isnt perfect and has its fair share of flaws, and those imperfections make the film worthwhile

The film, like Mehtas previous one which stuck faithfully to its far-out premise, works best when it is totally committed to being randy and bawdy. Maniesh Pauls local stud Gurpreet, wearer of co-ordinated sets, owner of a gym, keeper of beer in the locker and money in the drawer, talking up tharak (lust), is a hoot. The famous Patiala peg-and-leg finds an entry in a father-son confessional between Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, the latter being surprisingly effective as a low-grade moocher. This is Anil Kapoors show all the way, as he zig-zags between being loving dad-and-husband to a timorous man-about-town. Baaki tay, its your Bollywood family drama, and all needs to end well. Why so ssserious? Giddha shiddha paao, mauj manao.

Jugjugg Jeeyo comes from a long tradition of Hindi cinema (sample: No Entry and the Masti series) treating male infidelity as a comedic device while of course a similar lens is not trained on female infidelity. It is also a ear-drum-splitting experience. Not every film can be a Great Indian Kitchen in its attitude to patriarchy, but this one is a hyperventilating Jo and Jo that dilutes its gains with a heavy dose of backtracking and by creating a din.

While most of the jokes in Jugjugg Jeeyo land pretty well, theres background score to push you to laugh, in case some dont. The films music is catchy with songs like nach punjaban already becoming a rage. This family drama starts off well and ends even better. The runtime is slightly problematic and it could have done with a tighter edit. What really draws you in are the powerful performances and quirky dialogues. Just like its characters, Jugjugg Jeeyo too has its flaws but at the end of the day, its all in the family and this is just the kind of wholesome family entertainer that we need to watch in the theatre.

The climax of the film does show an arranged marriage coming to an end and love marriage rekindling but after having addressed the problems in both so as to neither judge or favour any. Perhaps, in that lies the strength of a film like ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ which employs all the traditional tropes and devices of a social-comedy drama and uses it to present a new dimension and perspective on marriage as we know it.
