Kaamyaab asks us to do something that we dont usually do shift focus from the hero to the actor in the periphery of the frame. The bit player who has a few lines like the henchman who runs in to say something to the villain, the doctor who delivers the bad news that the lead has only six months to live, the lawyer who loses in court. Basically the men and women you see in countless movies but whose names you dont know because they arent stars. They arent even character actors. They occupy that nebulous recognizable-yet-anonymous slot of celebrity.

Hardik Mehta has penned a story and screenplay which are about the film industry, its working and its typicalities. While people from the film industry may be able to identify with the characters and the milieu, the general audience which is not connected with the film industry would find it difficult to comprehend several things in the drama. On the whole, Kaamyaab is more for the festival circuit and will, therefore, not do much at the turnstiles.

Sanjay Mishra’s outstanding performance is complemented admirably by Deepak Dobriyal, Avtar Gill and Sarika Singh. The screenplay is insightful, if not blindingly revelatory. And some of the directorial sleights are commendably in tune with the demands of the material, making Kaamyaab a film that deserves all the Kaamyaab in the world.

Mehta never strays far from the meta themes though. While he doffs a hat to Tun Tun, Bob Christo, and Keshto Mukherjee among others, a host of fitting cameos make fleeting appearances too. All the while, Mehta keeps the tone humorous, often satirical, tinged with pathos, and always respectful.

Kaamyaab is an ode to Bollywood, the larger-than-life movies and their actors, bizarre wigs, love, drama, friendship passion but most importantly, it is about ones ability to realise their dreams even when the chips are down. It ends with an ode to character actors who aren’t with us anymore and that is perhaps the best part. Kaamyaab makes you feel sad about the condition of character actors in the movies, but it won’t hold you for too long. I will still recommend it for some clever dialogues and, of course, Sanjay Mishra.

Lower in the order of celebrity, those who essayed these bite-sized roles often found themselves battling a hollow existential crisis. And thus justifying their struggle of trying to elevate themselves from being a vaguely recognisable face to one whos celebrated for this craft. Some, as this film shows, decide to rest on their mild fame by accepting local commercials to stay in circulation if not to make ends meet, while others wallow in nostalgia over a neat peg or three. Kaamyaabis a heart-breaking watch and fitting tribute to these invisible stars of cinema.
