Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: A Visual Spectacle with Missed Opportunities

The Visual Effects

The visual effects are absolutely stunning, and some scenes seem like they belong in a Hollywood feature film. According to the producers, it’s one of the most advanced CGI-based movies in India to date, and it truly rivals global standards. The first half drags quite a lot due to heavy exposition, but the narrative picks up and leads to some action-packed scenes that are quite exhilarating. Deepika Padukone as Sum-80 is fresh and convincing in her performance—her character’s arc is intriguing and emotionally resonant.

kalki movie review (1)

This is what every other reviewer would say. But speaking about my own subjective opinion now: the movie created so much unmatched hype before release and used “Kalki” as clickbait. Yes, a clickbait! The entire plot actually revolves around the idea of Kalki with Kalki nowhere to be seen. The whole movie feels like it is just being dragged toward the second part, existing mainly to set up that sequel. The film surely looks impressive visually, with fine cinematography and VFX, but sadly, it seems like it was shot in leftover locations from the Dune Era. Its cinematography will give you déjà vu and make you feel like you’re watching the Indian version of Dune Part Two!

Dialogue Delivery

Let’s talk about the dialogues now. I really feel the dialogues could have been better and less cringy. After Aadipurush, Prabhas should have realized the importance of good dialogues. Some dialogues were good, I must say, but mostly they were lame. Now, onto the real star of the movie—Amitabh Bachchan. The character of Ashwatthama should have been given more screen time. To me, Amitabh Bachchan acted as the anchor of the ship, keeping the movie from clashing into an iceberg. In all honesty, the movie leaves you itching to see more of Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama.

Overall, it feels like dining in a five-star restaurant with great ambience, but the food just fills your stomach, not your appetite. So, I wouldn’t recommend you to watch the movie, but I also won’t suggest you avoid it either.
