The template for tackling taboo subjects with humor has been set by Vicky Donor and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. You combine naturalistic textures with solid performances and crackling writing. Khandaani Shafakhana gets only the first one rightBut the rest of Khandaani Shafakhana is a slog. The film takes forever to get started. We spend too much time getting to know Babys tough circumstances. And the tonality is all over the place. The film wants to be funny but the writing is too weak and the feeble jokes are underlined with loud background music, cueing us to laugh. The film also wants to deliver a serious message about the importance of being open about sex so entire scenes play out like public service announcements, in which characters espouse the cause.

On the whole, Khandaani Shafakhana is a flop show all the way. Its a comedy which will throw up tragic box-office figures because it hardly makes the audience laugh or even smile.

The problem arises when a film like this tries to play sexual troubles for laughs €” making jokes of a wrestler with a broken penis, or a popular musician suffering from erectile disorder €” and while Khandaani Shafakhana tries to eventually reach out with empathy, the initial attempts at humour rise mostly from the heroines disgust.

This insistence on a balancing act lets the film down. Which is a pity because this film could have been something. Annu Kapoor, playing a sympathetic lawyer here, reminds us of Vicky Donor, which first opened up conversation around sex and virility and fertility. Khandaani Shafakhana could have been a great extension, a vehicle to shed inhibitions and talk, really talk, especially with a young woman in the lead. Female desire could have been brought up, not just as a brief joke which perks things up momentarily. But it doesnt, and the film stays, for most part, flat, and yes, limp

In the past, we have seen films like Vicky Donor and Shubh Mangal Savadhan handle sensitive subjects (read sperm donation and erectile dysfunction) with class, tact and comedy. While this films intent is bang on, what it really needed was a heavier dose of humour and entertainment.

All said and done, the intent is pure but the story isnt pious. This couldve been another Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, only if it had better writing. Skip it to watch it on a lazy day months from now, still not sure if youll be able to finish it.

Though the movie highlights one of the important issues of society, it has got loose ends and is not properly executed. There is a lack of emotions and it is difficult for the audience to connect with the movie. There have been many movies which are based on a similar theme and are made with a lot more passion and focus. Sonakshi Sinha is essaying the role of a Punjabi girl but she fails miserably in her dialogue delivery as a true Punjaban. The movie seems unrealistic at certain points, especially when Sonakshi Sinha having no prior knowledge of medicine, starts treating patients with perfection. It was difficult to figure out the mood of the film. Was it a serious issue or was it all a joke?

It helps also that the movie is never preachy, but tries to put out its message in a light-hearted palatable manner.Khandaani Shafakhana is not a movie for everyone; it is bold, in-your-face, and makes a strong case for breaking societal shackles around a topic that is still considered taboo in most Asian families. If you like issue-based movies with a heavy dose of laughter, then go for it.

The official promo of Khandaani Shafakhana presented the film as a sex comedy with a social message. However, barring a few jokes here and there, most of which come in the first half, the film mainly focusses on showcasing Babys struggle. That sex is talked about in hushed tones in the worlds most populous democracy is repeatedly brought up. But the point is made in a rather old-fashioned manner, something that totally puts you off.A bland screenplay and punchless dialogue restrict Khandaani Shafakhana from going beyond the ordinary. It neither works as a comedy nor as an emotional tale. Its a film that perpetually remains confused about its tone.

Also be warned, Khandaani Shafsakhana cant hold a candle to Vicky Donor, a film in which the humour and wit came easy and seamlessly. The pace of this entertainer feels unhurried. Dont beat yourself up for twitching in your seat, it takes nearly an hour for the film to shift gears and get into the thick of action. But it gets better after its languid introduction to its main players. While the message behind this film is laudable, it isnt always exciting. If you are hoping that this movie will end with a big bang, you are mistaken.
