Comedy is serious business and director MudassarAziz gets it right, though only in parts… Strengths: Some genuinely funny moments + AkshayKumar’s impeccable comic timing… Drawbacks: Writing could’ve been sharper + overstretched second half.

On the whole, Khel Khel Mein is a fair entertainer but it will find favour among the classes only, and hence will score more in multiplexes and the big cities. Business, therefore, will not be up to the mark.

The length of the movie makes things sag in bits, especially in the second half. Plus, some of the ‘reveals’ aren’t that madly interesting either. In the interests of keeping things light and frothy, some characters are given arcs which threaten to redeem them. Which does this kind of film no good: a little more of the some-men-will never-change just like leopards and their spots, would have made it a no-holds-barred banger. Erm.

‘Khel Khel Mein’ is a watchable family entertainer with a message. If you are looking for a clean comedy that doesn’t rely on double-meaning and innuendo-laden one-liners, this is the ticket to buy this Independence Day.

You can definitely give it a watch as it marks Akshay’s return to comedy five years after Housefull 4. He’s the glue that holds everything in the setting together despite being caught in an unhappy marriage. Look out for the scene where he has a conversation with his daughter who asks if she should break her virginity. He’s daddy cool, for sure! By the end of it, Khel Khel Mein becomes a film about acceptance and subtly makes a statement on how there’s no right and wrong when it comes to relationships. The film celebrates the grey and the messy perfection of marriages and friendships.

The first half of the film is a delightful mix of humour and light-heartedness, setting a buoyant tone that keeps the audience entertained. However, the second half shifts gears, delving into darker, more intense territory as explosive truths are revealed. The heightened emotions and drama in the latter half can feel overwhelming, tipping the balance into melodrama and making it a bit too heavy for the audience to fully digest.

Khel Khel Mein switches between laughs and drama. As a whole product, it is entertaining. With the possibility of a sequel, this one could be a fun ride if watched with an unbiased lens.

Khel Khel Mein is sadly undone by its second half that suffers from what can be best described as the Mood Swing syndrome. Only people with massive mood swings can relate to the jitteriness of the film’s narrative. The tone changes as quickly as Akshay Kumar releases his films. Different revelations are met with different reactions. And every emotional turmoil is followed by another joke to deflate the tension. But that’s also where the film suffers; Aziz is so hell bent on making Khel Khel Mein a crowd pleasing Akshay Kumar comedy that certain conflicts never get the critique they deserve. Come to think of it, for all those who have seen the original Italian film, the film sheds light on childlessness, infidelity, homosexuality, and at one point, Kumar also speaks about the vitality of making decisions from the heart.
