Theres no word better than lazy to accurately describe Jackie Chans new film Kung Fu Yoga, in which the Hong Kong action star plays an Indiana Jones-like figure on a quest to unearth long-buried treasure of an ancient Indian kingdom. The only time I had a good laugh was watching his expressions fly as he sportingly shook a leg in the films big Bollywood-style dance number. Kung Fu Yoga is a disappointment for Jackie Chan fans. The actor deserves better, and so do we. Im going with one-and-a-half out of five.

As a film critic, I get to see plenty of bad films but every once in a while, you get a film that is hypnotic in its awfulness. Which means its so bad that you cant look away. Kung Fu Yoga is that film. Kung Fu Yoga feels like a film that was made up on the spot. The action lurches from China to Tibet to Dubai to Rajasthan. Much fuss is made about a 212 carat diamond. And at one point, Chan ends up in a car chase with a lion in the backseat.

Kung Fu Yoga further embarrasses itself by assuming theres still an audience for India as a country of attention-seeking snakes, rope tricks mid-air suspended sadhus and royalty that looks straight out of a garishly-dressed mannequin off S V Road. Worn down by shabby aesthetics and absurd mumbo jumbo, Kung Fu Yoga assaults both senses and soul. Not a combination you want to try.

At one point in the film, Sonu Soods character asks: are you guys having fun? At which you shake yourself awake to respond with a resounding no.And thats such a pity because Jackie Chan is an experienced jokester, and this film which seeks to meld Kung Fu and Yoga, two great civilisations, two great traditions, Hindi-China-bhai-bhai, yada yada, should rightly have been a barrel of laughs. But Kung Fu Yoga, which is a cheat title, because it has barely any yoga and a lot of jaded Kung Fu moves, does nothing but put you to sleep.

Theres some elementary-level Kung Fu and absolutely no yoga (but how else would India be represented in the title?); the English dubbing makes for awkward viewing and many lines seem to be lost in translation; there is altogether too much CGI work and to top it all, the movie sticks to a Western view of India (Elephants! Princesses clad in jewels! Temples! Snake Charmers!). It also has a strong Raiders Of The Lost Ark-meets-Temple Of Doom vibe.

Is there anything sadder than watching an ageing superstars desperate attempts to keep himself afloat? If you have grown up watching Jackie Chan movies and loved him more for his comic timing and endearing goofiness or his expert kung fu, Kung Fu Yoga will leave you with a feeling of sadness.If only the film were equipped with anything resembling a coherent plot. There are no thrills, or spills. None of the joyous laughter we have come to expect from a Jackie Chan.

Kung Fu Yoga has the looks of a rather ill-advised rehash of The Myth, a box office bomb that the same actor-director firm had delivered over a decade ago.Apart from the giddy fight sequences and car chases staged in different locations, Kung Fu Yoga pits the characters against sundry computer-generated animals.Imagine yourself in the place of the lion. If you don’t find your innards in a knot by the end of the film, your head will certainly be in a spin. You won’t, for sure, be breaking into dance.

The film promises and man, theres action! Watching Jackie Chans Kung Fu movies is worth all the money you spend on the film. The film is also visually good and there is humour at the right places. The second half of the film will literally make you nostalgic if you were a 90s kid who loved the idea of solving crimes or puzzles. Its not a film that you must watch but if you do, youll definitely enjoy it. Its a must watch only if youre a Jackie Chan fan.

Apart from Kung Fu, Chan also mastered parkour even before the term was coined. In his films, he experimented with freestyle running, hopping over walls, vehicles and everything that would obstruct his path. You should too — only in the opposite direction from the multiplex that’s screening this film.
