The film itself is dense and difficult to work through, steeped as it is in talky scenes as Lincoln tries every trick in his book, including horse-trading and some twisting of facts, to get the amendment passed. What stays with you in the end, is Lincoln’s steely moral compass – so focused on abolishing the inhuman practice of slavery that he poured every bit of himself into that ambition. I’m going with three and a half out of five for Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”. It’s far from an easy watch, but its important story and the towering central performance demands that you make time for it.

The screenplay, written by Oscar-nominee Tony Kushner, moves deftly between the personal and political. Here, the passing of legislature specifically the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery – becomes a historical thriller. We see the minutiae of statecraft the maneuvering and compromises, the corruption and posturing. Im not very familiar with American history. Like me, you might also find some moments and conversations in this film confusing. But stay with it. Because Lincoln is one of those films that enriches you as a human being. Im going with four stars.

Indeed, Lincoln shows us a whole new side to the ending of American slavery, taking us behind blood-stained fields of war into the backrooms of real politics, chambers where representatives cut sharp deals, attics where lobbyists haggle ‘patronage-pay’, corners of grand Houses where leaders drop their bluster and name their price.On the downside, Lincoln is long-winded, clutching strands – like the President’s sons – that needlessly distract from its pointed political play. Its first half’s slow, the second quicker but deep-set in American minutiae. Still, as one of its senators finally roars, “God damn it – I’m voting yes.” NOTE: You will not like this if you’re bored by wordy historical dramas.

Adapted from Doris Kearns Goodwins book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, the film is ostensibly about a mans struggle to pass legislation. On a deeper level, its about a dream to usher in an age of equality. Unfortunately, the turmoil, political conundrums and intrigues and Lincolns wiles never present a deeper sense of captivation. , Lincoln is not a very cinematic film. In some ways, this is refreshing. While cinemagoers may get less than what they bargained for, actors will find a master class in Lincoln. Above the direction and writing, Day-Lewis makes the film work. The film is a showcase for his talent and the latter puts. Likewise, history fans and political science students could salvage something from this film.

Lincoln is set around the 16th Presidents tumultuous final months in office during which he pursues a course of action designed to end the bloody civil war, unite the country and abolish slavery. Two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays the titular character, truly gets under the skin of his character and impresses as the 6 foot 4 inch-tall US president at odds with his family and representatives of the Democratic Party. The Lincoln who emerges is a man of raw paradoxes, funny and solemn, a playful storyteller and fierce power broker, a shrewd commander and a vulnerable father. No wonder, Lincoln is the front-runner for the coveted Oscar awards. Go watch this one for Spielbergs charm and a slice of American history.
