LUCY ENGLISH MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: CNN IBN

Luc Besson, the director of such films as La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, knows a thing or two about creating iconic female action heroes. His latest, Lucy, is another stab at a high-concept action movie with a tough chick at its centre. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Lucy. At best it’s a guilty pleasure, with a convincing performance from Johansson who convincingly goes from victim to warrior with the ease of a pro.

While the concept is highly intriguing and thought-provoking, you cannot stretch an idea way beyond its limits. Lucy’s dilemma is mysterious and gripping but as the film oscillates between sci-fi, action and philosophy, you somewhere find it all too pseudo-cerebral and convoluted. The combination of multiple genres makes the film look like a bizarre mix of The Tree of Life and La Femme Nikita! may fail to woo the mainstream audience as it doesn’t boast an extravagant budget or thrilling special effects. You don’t feel for the protagonist either as she loses everything that makes her human, including pain and fear of death. However, if you are a fan of ‘experimental’ cinema, you will appreciate this unconventional attempt.

Although Lucy is based on what several neurologists have called an urban legend — that is, the idea that human beings only use 10 percent of their brain — it doesn’t mean that the film isn’t a highly entertaining one.Lucy could have used more action and a better soundtrack and although it isn’t really a masterpiece, it cannot be dismissed either. Lucy is a visual treat — like National Geographic in HD. But better. If Hollywood’s version of science is anything to go by, Luc Besson was probably using 100 percent of the capacity of his brain when he made Lucy.

The film is worth watching because of Scarlett Johansson who effortlessly slips into this character. It’s a treat to see her in a drugged state and her non-stop high is quite a spectacle! Like I had said earlier, whether this fallacy makes sense or not, it doesn’t matter. It just makes for an interesting film plot which filmmaker Luc Besson exploits and successfully delivers through this entertaining film.

Overall, despite good production quality, decent visuals, and high action drama, Besson`s fans would be disappointed because of the lack of noir-action drama. For the thinking audience, the same hooks that make the film engaging makes it look ridiculous and absurd.
