Madaari sticks to a template similar to Neeraj Pandeys A Wednesday, but doesnt drum up the same urgency. The cops, led by a solemn-faced Jimmy Shergill, find themselves engaged in a wild goose chase for Nirmal, but theres very little tension to this battle of wits. Also, Kamats depiction of a landscape altered by social media engagement and public opinion is real but sloppily handled. Im going with two-and-a-half out of five for Madaari. Arguably one of the finest actors of our times, Irrfan Khan deserves films worthy of his talent. This one comes up short.

On the whole, Madaari is an ordinary fare which will barely touch the average mark, if at all. Business in the big cities and in circuits like Bombay, Delhi-U.P., East Punjab and South will be better than in circuits like C.P. Berar, C.I., Rajasthan and Bihar. It will win more critical acclaim than box-office rewards.

Kudos to Irrfan and Nishikant Kamat for daring to make this poignant, provocative and politically incorrect piece of cinema, that makes its point unabashedly. Though predictable and a tad stretched, the emotional crime drama unfolds like a thriller. Kamat’s execution falters a bit though. He tries too hard to be ambiguous at times, when a simple storytelling could have been as effective. However, overall, his intent deserves an applause as Madaari shames the trend of rising apathy that is often misconstrued as resilience.

Madaari isn’t the first Hindi film to advocate a brand of vigilantism that borders on the fascist. Nor is it likely to be the last. But its point about the deadly distortions of democracy is terribly laboured and sketchily articulated. Terms like instant justice, kangaroo court, media trial, rule of law and ideal voter are bandied about. They do not eventually add up to much because the tale of loss and retribution that Madaari sets out to narrate is lost in a heap of cliches.

Because a film like Madaari is a film that needs to be made.We need movies that will hold up a mirror to us and force us to look at the kind of society we are content to live in today. We need movies that will stop us from being frogs in a slowly boiling pot of water, absorbing the gently rising heat, not realising that, soon, it will kill us. We need movies that will awaken us, or shame us, so that we consciously refuse to succumb to a corrupt system. We need movies that will motivate us to teach our children the value of doing things the right way. Unfortunately, the well-intentioned Madaari fails to make it to that space in our hearts.

The films uninspiring script is already a problem and the execution of it is another. Using stock images of happening across India, the director tries to make a hard hitting impact on the viewer but completely fails at it. Madaari is a lost cause. The story in spite of having potential, fails at execution and thanks to its dramatic discourse, shifts away from its focus. I am going with a 2/5 for the film.

While MADAARI’s trailers gave an impression about the film being high on drama and adrenaline rush galore, the film turns out to be (almost) the opposite. While the film’s story (Shailja Kejriwal) is very average, its screenplay (Ritesh Shah) is unconvincing and very convenient, with lot of cinematic liberties taken to push the story forward. On the whole MADAARI comes across as a thriller which holds your attention only in parts. It lacks consistency and punch and will therefore appeal to a limited set of audience. At the box office, its business prospects will be limited.

The film suffers from predictability, and scenes keep on dragging aimlessly, especially the ones showing Nirmals past. Things begin to get life in the final portions, but again thats only due to Irrfan and Dalvi the execution is amateurish. Madaari may have its heart in the right place, but an average direction and flawed narrative let down the movies honest intentions. Watch it only for a terrific Irrfan Khan! But then, the man is good even he is being shown just sitting on a bench!

As a suspense thriller, Madaari doesnt afford any startling twists. The mystery isnt nail-biting, but Khan manages to keep you intrigued. While the second half meanders, the conclusion isnt a let down. The face-off between a criminal and the corrupt politicians packs a punch. Madaari would have benefited hugely from a 10-minute trim (the songs underlining the father-son bond was excessive). But in all, Madaari was engaging and touched upon some deep subjects like corruption, the power of social media and public opinion, with alacrity.
