€œMade in China€ clocks in at a little over two hours, yet it feels unduly stretched. The films message about de-stigmatizing sex is well intentioned, but like everything else thats good here its buried under the weight of a far-from-perfect script. Im going with two-and-a-half out of five.

On the whole, Made In China has poor merits and, being a flop fare, it will not find appreciation at the box-office. The festive days (after the pre-Diwali weekend) may prove slightly beneficial for the film but alongside that, the negative publicity for the film will prove detrimental to the interests of the film.

The setting and mileu of Ahmedabad is captured well. However, where Made in China falters is the weak storyline with digressions in the narrative and portions that feel like a stretch. There are some sparks of humor and a few crude jokes thrown in here and there. At the heart of it, Made in China carries the message of normalizing conversations around sex and exposing the taboo and hypocrisy surrounding it, which is a commendable effort but it also does get preachy. Overall, this one is Rajkummar Raos film all the way and worth a watch to savor his acting prowess.

Logic seems to be on a break in some parts of Made In China. The film, directed by Mikhil Musale, also suffers from a slow pace in the second half, but the overall product isn’t too shabby. From an international business tycoon to his wife, Raghu takes advice from everyone, only to climb up the ladder in the world of business. The narrative is enhanced by well-written dialogues.Made In China is also an example of how to impart sex education, sans metaphors and any awkwardness. An example that Shilpi Dasgupta, director of the Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Khandaani Shafakhana, must see.

Made In China begins on a zany note. A top-ranking Chinese official visiting Ahmedabad comes to a sorry pass after ingesting what looks suspiciously like an aphrodisiac. A tale of vim-and-vigour-laced-with-viagra in dry Gujjuland? Finally, a genuinely adult sexcapade? The initial bits keep up the light tone and there are some laughs to be had, but all too soon, as it happens so often in Bollywood, everything goes limp.

But that isn’t all there is to Made In China, adapted from a novel of the same name by Parinda Joshi and directed by Mikhil Musale. The film isn’t happy being just a comedy. It arrogates to itself a serious, larger purpose and takes a shot at earnest drama centred on performance anxiety. When sex and guilt go hand in hand, the film tells us, quacks and charlatans have a field day. On paper, the notion is great. On the screen, the result isn’t.Made in China gets the ‘foreplay’ part of the narrative right, but the actual act is a massive misfire.

The title of Mikhil Musale’s Made in China suggests one thing. Its hodgepodge of multiple themes, entirely another. It wants to show the difficulties of setting up a successful business but its preoccupation with sexual taboos is where it gets its excitement from.Neither make for compelling viewing.Alternating between pedestrian comedy and overwrought drama, Made in China’s biggest problem is its inclination to repeatedly digress, resulting in fleeting interest in its helter-skelter proceedings.

Made In China fails to hit the bull’s eye because it sorely needed an evening out of pace and tone, depth of characterisation and detailing in the plotline. The best thing about it are Rao and Irani who are a pleasure to watch even in this middling affair.
