That unforgettable line and the image of a female warrior on horseback, a sword raised in one hand, a baby strapped to her back, is, for many, the first thing that comes to mind when one mentions Rani Lakshmibai. As it turns out, this film, directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and Kangana herself, doesnt expand your understanding of the iconic warrior queen much more.Im going with two-and-half out of five for the film, and an extra half for Kangana Ranauts terrific performance. Which makes it three out of five for Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.

The film cant match the epic scale of Baahubali or the aesthetics of Padmaavat but there is enough grandeur on display. Even the men are ferociously bejeweled and the fortresses are impressive. But you will have to ignore the inept CGI work, especially in the battle scenes.But despite these flaws, Manikarnika reveals Kangana as an artist with boundless ambition and Im excited to see what she creates next. Im going with three stars.

On the whole, Manikarnika Jhansi Ki Rani is a below-average fare which lacks a strong patriotic flavour and a strong antagonist. It has Kangana trying very hard to take it to the victory post but thats a tall order because of the relatively slow start and absence of entertainment value for the youth. Collections will jump tomorrow (26th January) due to Republic Day national holiday but that wont be enough to ensure that the film reaches the safety mark.

The film seems as historically accurate as Mel Gibsons Braveheart €” which is to say it prizes the valorous myth, and takes creative liberties to tell its story. This is fine as long as the story is gripping. Directed by Ranaut and Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi, Manikarnika achieves the simplistic ambition of saluting the queen, but feels too long and a bit too cardboard. The budgetary constraints show. The patchwork is constant. However, it must be said that all our period epics look like filmed theatre productions (only in the Baahubali films do swords appear heavy) and there is a straightforward earnestness to Manikarnika, even when craft is lacking. It feels less wasteful than excessive period catastrophes, and Id readily pick this over a baroque Sanjay Leela Bhansali carnival.

Manikarnika is agonizingly soulless. Platitudes piled upon synthetic platitudes do not add up to great cinema, especially when none of the film’s war cries delivers any bang for its buck. Save yours and give the film a miss unless you like the sound of misfires.

Overall, Manikarnika is a well-made film that highlights Kanganas prowess as an actor. For a first time filmmaker, she undoubtedly shows spark and potential as a storyteller. Short of an epic, this larger-than-life war drama has enough valour and spirit to keep you engaged in these pages of history.

Actor-director Kangana Ranauts Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, which chronicles the heroism and valour of a revered warrior, is as subtle as a sledge hammer.At every given turn, we are bludgeoned with Rani Laxmibais heroic tales about taking on British colonisers who wanted to annex her turf Jhansi, and all of it is done with as much pizzazz as an amateur school play production.If you are a fan of warrior epic thats solely Ranauts battlefield, this one is for you. Others can safely duck this nationalism-fuelled saga.

The film doesn’t attempt to fake feminism but rather provides enough instances as it builds momentum. Kangana debuts as a director and it shows as the film captures a sensitive side to the male characters and strongly portrays common women of the era, who were part of the rebellion. Manikarnika belongs to Kangana and she is back as a true war hero.

Taking such massive cinematic liberties is possibly what ruins what couldve been an authentic take on our first warrior princess. But alas, Bollywood is far more invested in turning every lead actor into a superhero. Theres no space for vulnerabilities or insecurities. Its always about how charged and self-righteous they are. Rani Lakshmibai is no different. Theres this constant urge to showcase her as a superwoman, who can, apart from doing wonders with swords, FLY on top of elephants and do quick somersaults. Despite wanting to know so much about Lakshmibai, the movie prefers to celebrate her unabashedly without ever throwing an insight into who she really was. So we are left googling for more information!
