I came away from Marjaavaan bored and exhausted. Its literally a film with no perceivable merit, and one that begs two key questions: How did this film get made? And why are we being taken for a ride?Im going with one out of five.

On the whole, Marjaavaan is a routine action-love story meant mainly for the masses but since Sidharth Malhotra doesnt have the image of an action hero, it will have limitations in commercial terms. At the box-office, it will do fair business.

Marjaavaan is the kind of film in which characters deliver dialogue and then walk away in slow motion. Men spend a few seconds growling and then they attack each other Ive never understood this. Why do you start doing aaaah when you are running toward someone? Basically, its a testosterone overdrive, which becomes tedious very quickly. The script is shoddy and at the center of it is Sidharth Malhotra trying to convince us that he can be an old-school hero. You can see his sincerity but he cant summon up the swagger. In one scene, Raghu gives a rousing speech with an arrow sticking in his heart. You need a unique conviction to pull off the sheer ludicrousness of this. Siddharths best work Kapoor & Sons, Student of the Year is in a quieter, more contemporary tone. His affable presence cant carry off masala mode.

The rivalry between Vishnu and Raghu is the core of the cringe-worthy two-hour-plus saga. While Ek Villain worked to some end, this one has a paper-thin plot and well, nothing else.Marjaavaan could perhaps be used as a new drinking game, where you raise your glass whenever a melodramatic or a rhyming one-liner is delivered. You will get drunk in the first half-hour itself. Guaranteed.

In Marjaavaan, which is anything but a film to die for, writer-director Milap Milan Zaveri whips up a stale masala concoction that transports the audience right back to a Bollywood era gone by. The turgid thriller is set in the Mumbai underworld, a fact that is grandly announced via a voiceover at the very outset, but neither the situations nor the locales in which the predictable action unfolds look remotely real.

People often look down upon the mass cinema and shrug it off but to create something on the celluloid that will make the audience cheer, whistle and clap is very difficult and not everyone’s cup of tea and Marjaavaan is a prime example of that. If, in today’s time, films that are a tribute to the cinema of the 70s and 80s then those are the likes of Singham, Simmba, Dabangg and even Milap’s own Satyameva Jayate. The story of the film is fine, the screenplay is okay too, it is the execution by Milap that doesn’t work for the most part and also the dialogues that should’ve been film’s strength.

The films plot is reminiscent of many potboilers straight out of the 80s, with barely any novelty in execution. There is love, drama, action and revenge packed in an exhausting two and a half hours of narrative, full of clich©s and stereotypes. Marjaavaan attempts to check all the boxes for an emotional action rollercoaster, but its dated execution doesnt quite make the kill.

In this film, someone refers to a €œdedh kilo ka dimaag€ which is supposedly the most fierce weapon of all. If only it wouldve been deployed against this battle against better sense, we wouldn’t have to succumb to this tedious watch.

The movie plays out in a tedious, non-linear pattern where the past and the present life of an embattled Raghu play out. The flashback as to why Raghu snuffs the life of his soul mate and whether he extracts revenge for being forced into manslaughter are the high points.Theres a scene where the gangster patriarch says: €œRaghu put a bullet in Zoyas heart and she died. But he died with her€. Our thought: Viewers died a small death too. Watch this at your own risk.

‘Marjaavan’ falls several shades short of a proper Bollywood masala entertainer that it aspires to in spite of having all the ingredients for it. The weak and cliched plotline along with heavy-duty dialogues that should have impressed but end up sounding hollow is only part of the problem. If you are a fan of action movies that are high on drama but low on impact, only then go for it.
