MILLION DOLLAR ARM MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: CNN IBN

It’s hard to the resist the charms of a film as decidedly feel-good as ‘Million Dollar Arm’, even if does hit every note and plot turn with brazen predictability. This old-fashioned sports movie from Disney has all the makings of a typical underdog story, with a fish-out-of-water twist thrown in for laughs. The stereotypes notwithstanding, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is solidly staged, and inhabited with richly-drawn characters. AR Rahman’s soundtrack fits in nicely with the narrative, making this a pleasing enough watch for the weekend. I’m going with three out of five. If you seek comfort in the familiar, this film won’t disappoint.

Director Craig Gillespie tells this story with enough verve and schmaltz to melt the hardest heart. There were moments in this film when I groaned audibly because it was so corny. What matters is that Million Dollar Arm leaves you with a smile on your face and a swing in your step and thats all it is designed to do. Besides it gave me a real kick to see the iconic Disney logo backed by A. R. Rahmans music. Im going with three stars.

Sports agent JB Bernstein is clutching at straws to save his career. But a stroke of late-night inspiration leads him to India to find two Major League Baseball star pitchers. Sure, there are all the usual cliches you’d expect from a movie that sees India through the Occidental lens. But these cliches are handled in such a deft manner by Gillespie as to make the overall package quite heartwarming.  JB also learns how he needs to change himself in order to get the best out of his two charges. Based on a true story, it’s a film about hope, determination, believing in oneself and the importance of the journey as compared to the destination.

Seriously, when will white people stop finding inner peace in India while simultaneously applying sanitiser all day long? Million Dollar Arm was supposed to be the story of dreams coming true, and it is to a certain extent, except that it is J B’s dreams that are the focus and not those of the players who live in abject poverty with winning the contest being the only way they can possibly get themselves out of it.

Director Craig Gillespie has struck a fine balance in portraying thrill of the sport and human desires. Million Dollar Arm is a must watch for sports movie lovers. But if you are not one, the movie will still impress you.
