Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen have written a complete masala film with plenty of twists and turns, friendships and betrayals, drama and action.  On the whole, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is a hit. It may have started a bit slow but its collections will grow as the positive word of mouth spreads.

Tom Cruise is so determined to make us happy that hes willing to risk his life for it. And heres the thing he delivers. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, the seventh installment in the Mission Impossible series, is a dazzling, consistently pleasurable ride.

Tom Cruise has been on his own mission as an actor and entertainer to outdo himself with audacious stunts in each entry. Dead Reckoning Part One is no different, where Cruise rides a bike off a cliff, as heavily promoted in the trailers. Naturally, this may appear to be the film’s centrepiece, and while it looks jaw-dropping on a big screen, the action has much more in store across its close to 3-hour run-time. The screenplays pacing takes a little beating, but the film is thrilling, especially in its climax.

Together, they deliver an action film which is beyond spectacular in scale. The film also resorts to fan service by dropping several references from the previous films in the franchise for loyal fans. And for those who do not get the references, Cruise makes up for it with his breathtaking visuals and candour. The MI franchise has always been about action and intrigue more than the story itself. The seventh film in the franchise is no different.

It ultimately boils down to this: how many leaps of faith can you take for Tom Cruise?
Well, cant ever fault Cruise for not trying. But, can fault the seventh Mission Impossible, for overtrying. As if resorting to the irritating and, frankly, greedy trend of splitting a film into two is not enough, as if the interminable length of 164 minutes of this part is not enough, Dead Reckoning fills up the time with endless talk. Most of it involves talking up its super villain, dubbed €œThe Entity€.

The latest instalment has several action set pieces that are novel, breathtakingly spectacular, and they firmly hold the narrative. Tom driving the Fiat 500 with one hand through the busy streets of Paris with Grace (Hayley Atwell) will keep you at the edge of your seat. Amid the action, this sequence will evoke some genuine laughs as well. A hand-to-hand combat sequence in a narrow lane of Rome will leave you gasping. The climatic sequence on the express train is way more than what you saw in the trailer, and you will be amazed by it. My palm was sweating during this scene because of its intensity and the originality of the sequence. Dead Reckoning has the most stunts in a Mission: Impossible film.

Besides the action scenes, Mission: Impossible €” Dead Reckoning Part One offers a good but slow story. Writers Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen intertwine the new story while stitching in the nods to all the previous Mission: Impossible films. The film offers hoot-worthy moments in the first half but the writing does start to drag in the second half, weighing down the film a little before kicking in the climax. However, credit where it is due, Mission: Impossible €” Dead Reckoning Part One ends well, with the film closing on a proper climatic note.

Thankfully, the film doesn’t affix the viewers to some crazy cliffhanger in the end and concludes on a rather satisfying note with just enough nudge on what to expect from the next installment. It is a clever move because no matter how impossible the mission seems, we know Tom Cruise will get the job done as we eagerly await his next daring stunt.Bring on the part two!
