This is a movie about space, scientists, facts and physics, but there is no dearth of emotion. Some of it is trite and there is manipulative pop patriotism the sort you expect from an Akshay Kumar film. Yet Mission Mangal is more restrained in tone than the stars recent outings like Kesari, PadMan, and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. There are also genuine moments in the film when you laugh, and when your heart soars. Despite the formulaic arc, the makers deliver an entertaining account of a complicated mission.

We get it. Its hard to make intelligence look entertaining. But its harder to make intelligence look stupid. And yet, this is exactly what Mission Mangal manages to do. It takes the core ISRO team behind Indias historical Mars Orbiter Mission and turns their incredible story into a tone-deaf cross between a fourth-grade Science lesson and a woke virtue-signalling exercise. Im all for massy dramatization, but this film is more like intellectual demonetization.

On the whole, Mission Mangal is mission accomplished €” and accomplished beautifully! It is a surefire hit and this in spite of being a class-appealing film. It will join the Rs. 100-crore club in a matter of four or five days. It shouldnt be a surprise if this film turns out to be Akshay Kumars highest-grossing solo starrer to-date. Yes, the film has the potential of crossing the Rs. 150-crore mark and even touching the 200-crore mark. Ladies and family audiences, besides the youth, will patronise the film in a big way.

The human interactions are the best part of the film. The downer is the science bits, clearly crafted for dummies. And it doesnt help that the computer-graphics feel a tad tacky: after years of watching stunning space visuals in Hollywood films, the scenes here seem sub-par.It leaves a smile on the face. And you do feel a swell of pride as the yaan comes into view and settles successfully in orbit. Despite the over-arching presence of the latter-day Mr India, sab mangal hai.

All nicely set up, Mission Mangal is ready to soar into the stratosphere even as many questions hover over the film. How advisable is turning a serious science-themed drama into a populist entertainer complete with high drama and over-simplified plotting? On the evidence of what pans out on the screen, there can be no clear answer. Some parts of Mission Mangal do work; others don’t.This isn’t Mission Magnificent. But it isn’t Mission Mangled either. Mission Mangal is watchable, if not always exhilarating, if you can get over its excesses.

The second half has all your attention, and the final climax is a nail-biting finish, though you obviously know what is going to happen. The visual effects of the Mars orbit have been done brilliantly, with the appropriate music to match the tension as well. It is fascinating to see the journey of the satellite’s journey from Earth to Mars. This is one of the film’s strongest points. There are not too many songs in the film, which is actually a relief. Songs like Shabaashiyan give the film a pleasant feel.Despite its flaws of excessive sermons and some crucial characters like Taapsee and Kirti not fleshed out completely, Mission Mangal makes for an entertaining Independence Day watch. The flight might face some turbulence but it lands well.

All films to do with science invariably have to dumb things down €” films about rocket-science doubly so €” but here things are regretfully oversimplified. So while there are times Mission Mangal plays out pleasantly enough as a cheesy entertainer with a message, complete with a caricaturish villain in Dalip Tahil with an unholy accent, there are other times everything feels like too much of a stretch €” even the runtime. There are times, alas, that the film is a saddening bore.

Under the vision of creative director R Balki and an average execution by filmmaker Jagan Shakti, ‘Mission Mangal’ makes good with its emotional highs and drama. In the end, when you see India’s scientists celebrate their hard-earned victory with the Mangalyaan orbiting Mars, you can’t help but cheer for the triumph of a nation and its scientific success. Despite the ups and downs, this story does make you believe that dreams do come true, especially in the vast expanses of the outer space.

All said and done, the movie depicts a mission showcasing an achievement with a very predictable storyline. It fails to hold on to what was important for the script, instead includes irrelevant sub-plots dragging the narrative. Two and a half stars!

Jagan Shakti’s story is superb and also very challenging. Its not easy to pen down a mainstream film with such a plot. Also many are not aware of what transpired behind the making of Indias Mars mission. Hence itll be exciting for them to witness the whole journey. Also there are so many twists and turns in the plot that one might not believe that some of the plot points are actually true incidents. R Balki, Jagan Shakti, Nidhi Singh Dharma and Saketh Kondipathi’s screenplay not only simplifies the proceedings but also make it massy. The screenplay blends science and entertainment seamlessly. The films goings on are extremely easy to comprehend. R Balki, Jagan Shakti, Nidhi Singh Dharma and Saketh Kondipathi’s dialogues are effective and funny.
