Mr. Holmes is an ironic new spin on iconic Sherlock Holmes which, instead of a deerstalker, raises a wry old eyebrow at the best-selling brand of Baker Street. However, the philosophy of this tale, inspired by the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, charms. At the end of his career, his powers fading, Holmes faces his greatest challenge. Casting Ian McKellen in the role of Holmes was a stroke of genius he’s got the twinkling wit and simmering inner darkness pat, and you barely believe this was the same guy who played Gandalf and Magneto. Both Ian McKellen and the director Bill Condon are clearly in love with the legacy of the author Arthur Conan Doyle, and their dedication and passion to bring something fresh to the table is apparent. Sometimes, the case isn’t the point, but the man in charge of the case is, and as a character drama ‘Mr Holmes succeeds as one of the best of the year.

Sherlock Holmes is seeing a revival of sorts, even if he never did go away, and this Mr Holmes could have been a welcome addition. In fact, in one inspired scene, Holmes even strays into a cinema hall to watch a film about him, and cringes seeing himself on screen. Thats the Holmes we know, who knows what from what. This Holmes is much too muddled. If you want to know, Watson makes one appearance, as just a hand.

Ian McKellen has outdone himself with this performance. His Sherlock has depth and heart. Every actor has delivered brilliantly and the director has portrayed Old England quite believably. Great scripts are rare, and this is definitely one of them.
