Nakkash only skims the surface of a complex theme. Instead of raining hammer blows on politics that is driven by discord and distrust, it manages to inflict only a few pin pricks on its target. Be that as it may, any film that has its heart in the right place – Nakkash does – merits commendation.

It goes without saying that the theme of Nakkash is relevant to the times we live in, where right-wing establishments worldwide have been overtly promoting animosity between communities. Relevance does not necessarily make for great cinema though, and Nakkash starts off looking like it might possibly go down a clich©d sermonising route. Fortunately, it does not it simply tells a relatable story.

What doesnt work for Nakkash is the ultimate sacrifice the writer forces upon the lead role that he makes in the name of friendship, and at a time where people do not flutter eyelashes before turning backs on their kith and kin; ho-hum. In a nutshell, this drama on social issues ticks all the boxes of a progressive and offbeat movie, and despite its inconsiderable flaws, one should give this art film a try!

Clearly the intention of the film is to hold a mirror to where we have reached as a nation, with hatred and bigotry replacing trust and bhaichara, the sort of intention we need to see more of because it would seem only cinema can join the vanishing dots of the India that used to be.And the end feels flat. You are left wishing for a little more optimism. Or is this what we have to live with, going forward?

Given the turbulent times we live in, a story about a Muslim craftsman whos targeted for carving intricate designs on stone for Hindu temples in Varanasi would be pertinent. In a world where secularism is often brandished as a means to an end, this film couldve potentially conveyed the wrath inflicted on those who selflessly practice it. But the makers barely manage to go beyond the compelling premise and its inevitable conclusion can be predicted just minutes into the film.

There isnt enough raw material for a 125-minute movie, and the idea that humans are largely tolerant of each other until they are provoked by outside forces is as naive as it is hopeful. While the performances are mostly workmanlike, Kumud Mishra exudes authority as the priest who tries hard to restore Varanasis reputation for tolerance before it all went under.

The tone gets too sanctimonious and earnest and often screechy, the acting veers towards the melodramatic but films plea to save manushyata (humaneness and humanity) is well-intentioned and hits the right spot. The timing of its release makes one wonder if its an unintended metaphor of our times. Or if its a film that is marooned and stranded because the cause its propagating is itself a lost one. At least for now.
