Over the longest two hours and five minutes of your life, Oblivion packs in a mawkish story about a brave human determined to control his own destiny. There are too many twists that add little value here, and the climax appears intentionally obtuse. Despite setting up its premise with genuine intrigue, the film quickly leaves you puzzled, then exhausted by its lethargic pace. Tom Cruise, oozing movie-star charisma, does his best to salvage this dreary enterprise, but is let down by the stilted script.

Oblivion, which was partially shot in Iceland, has some staggeringly beautiful landscapes and a very cool bubble aircraft that ferries Harper back and forth. But mostly director Joseph Kosinskis film, adapted from his own unpublished graphic novel, feels like one of drones featured in the film. Its gleaming, mechanical and lifeless. At over two hours, Oblivion becomes a test of Cruises charisma and your patience. Im going with two and a half stars. This is one of those tepid films that doesnt soar or sink enough to arouse any emotion.

Oblivion is not your video game-esque, fast-paced sci-fi action film which offers cheap thrills. It’s a profound, cerebral drama which focuses on Jack’s inner journey and his relentless search for identity.In spite of Joseph Kosinski’s unhurried approach towards the film’s buildup, he manages to keep you thoroughly engaged, thanks to brilliant production design and clever imagination. In terms of story-telling, the film stays unpredictable, thus convincing us to patiently wait as the mystery unfolds, even when it feels a tad directionless at times. Like a novel, the film stays unputdownable till the end. Oblivion is primarily a great visual experience. The mystifying sombreness of a post-apocalyptic earth has been captured brilliantly. Note: You may not like the film if you do not like slow-paced science-fiction movies, high on human emotions.

Oblivions Jack Harper is a post-apocalyptic survivor and saviour of (barely visible) mankind drawing inspiration from every science-fiction fantasy worth its salt in Hollywood. In the end, Kosinskis Oblivion, outside its spectacular, smooth surface, is only a middling effort that borrows liberally in tone and technique from just about every science-fiction movie — Star Wars, Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report, Tron: Legacy or, what the heck, even Wall-E, and STILL misses the point.

There comes a point while watching Oblivion where you can’t help but chuckle and wonder if this truly is Tom Cruise’s version of reality being played on the big screen. Most of the stuff characters say during the 90 odd minutes is supposed to be deep. It isn’t as profound as the blue or red pill scene from Matrix, but there is a conscious attempt from the film maker to rise above the banal and be something else. So as the cast and crew grapples with the intricacies and subliminal messages the film seeks to deliver, we like Cruise have a baffled, whats going on dude expression through the proceedings. Oblivion is like an expensive piece of art that receives praise but no buyers.

After establishing the stunning setting and background of our story, is when the problem begins. The pace slackens as you watch Jack take out his spacecraft and fly down to Earth everyday to repair the drones that keep the planet safe from whatever remaining Alien activity there is. It is a bit of a drag till you get to see the required plot points arrive. When they do, they explode, leaving you confused (the ones who werent paying attention) and go back to a slow narrative once again.I was disappointed on the whole, despite the stunning visuals and the intriguing premise. But you make your choice. The visuals may be worth the admission price to you. Verdict: Visually stunning but lacks soul. Go watch, not feel.
