When Disney adapts a classic fairy-tale, you can rest assured that the film would be nothing less than a visual spectacle which seamlessly blends physical sets with CGI. The 3D is spectacular. Do not miss out on the opening titles and scenes as they are shot in the gorgeous sepia tone. Once Oscar enters Oz, colours take over. The film, however falters when it comes to the length and a few performances. The film is slightly overlong. The film strongly resembles Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. If you fancied that one, you’d definitely love Raimi’s feel-good pre-boot of the classic. Note: You may not like this film if magical fantasies are not your cup of tea.

This prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz, is loaded with talented actors, staggering CGI visuals and 3D in short, everything that a 200-million dollar budget can buy. And yet, there isnt a moment in this film that matches the magic of the original 1939 film. Children might enjoy Oz: The Great and Powerful in the way that they enjoy fast food: its filling but insubstantial. But after seeing this, I recommend you take them back to the original yellow brick road. The magic of Dorothys journey remains unmatched. Im going with two and a half stars.

Every few minutes, some nasty, grotesque monster-faces sprang up from nowhere to startle, courtesy a rather impactful 3D. Ultimately, of course, this is a Disney film and even Raimi-designed cheap thrills are restricted to a limited quota. And because this is a Disney film, good wins over evil. My point is does good have to be so boring, unspectacular and dim? Ditto for the baddies. The women on both sides are perfectly capable of handling their own battle. They are witches with wands, for gods sake, a device they make abundant use of to engage in the climatic Star Warsesque tussle. Whats the need to beg a worthless wizard to butt in and save the day? Oz the Great and Powerful starts out decently only to collapse into a crazy hotchpotch of CGI-magic, B-grade horror, syrupy Disneyphilia and warped women’s, er witches, lib.
