Pacific Rim pits robots against monsters in what may be a silly, preposterous premise, but its so much fun, youll feel like an excited 12-year-old all over again. If you watch the film in IMAX 3D like I did, youll have a stupid grin plastered all over your face because its all just unbelievably entertaining. Nicely shot, much of it against the neon streets of Hong Kong where the films latter portions are staged, Pacific Rim is the kind of film that combines the Hollywood blockbuster aesthetic with a real love for Asian monster mythology. Im going with four out of five. Its more enjoyable than everything else Hollywood has thrown our way this summer.

Stripped down, this movie is essentially about giant robots and giant sea monsters bashing each other up. The visuals are undeniably great and so are the effects. You’ll even get to see a Jaeger bludgeon a Kaiju with a cargo ship. But the visuals will have to be this film’s calling card because the ballast that holds it back is generic acting, monster film cliches and a sparse script. For once though, the battle for the planet is being fought someplace other than the USA. Although the story line is passable, the real stars in Pacific Rim are the Jaegers. Note: You may not like this film if you don’t enjoy large-scale, violent, robot-versus-monster movies.

A stream of exclamations would fittingly describe the sense of awe, exhilaration and bewilderment I experienced after watching Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. In essence and visuals, Pacific Rim pays a loving tribute to the Japanese monster films genre dipped in del Toro’s quirky brand of aggression. With Pacific Rim he’s gone bigger beyond measure, beyond the stretch of naked eyes, beyond the dimensions of supreme imagination. This is possibly the best and the grandest belated gift a man can offer his childhood. Do yourself a favour.

There’s no denying the visual wizardry of this project. Right from the opening scene, to the end credits there is amazing attention to detail. Apart from the big fireworks and fight scenes, there is an underlying story of emotional connect between the key characters. Once we see the Kaiju in its full glory (and that happens early on), there is a sense of repetition that seeps in. Unlike Godzilla, these creatures have variations, they come in different sizes, some fly, others swim. Also the battle scenes especially the ones right before the climax get a tad bit complex. Load yourself with ample popcorn, get comfy and marvel at Del Toro’s ground breaking VFX as Pacific Rim sets a new benchmark in film making.
