The plot is nothing more than a collection of clich©s that reunites Jake with his half sister (Rinko Kikuchi), an old rival (Scott Eastwood), and a teenage hacker (Cailee Spaeny), and theyre thrown together as a team to save the planet. Those deadly kaiju dont show up till pretty late in the film, and predictably the action is set-piece after set-piece involving lots of noise and lots of special effects. But unlike the Transformers movies, whose breathless editing makes it hard to tell whos doing what to whom, the sequences here are often spectacular to look at and take in, particularly the impressive climax at the top of Mt Fuji in Japan.

The humour in this sequel is terribly forced as it focuses mostly on franchise-building pegs at the cost of storytelling basics. The movie seems hellbent on reminding you that its an action blockbuster every 5 minutes or so with battle sequences that jump right off the screen, as they should in 3D. This is the only reason to watch this on the biggest screen around. Devoid of the heart and soul of its predecessor, Pacific Rim: Uprising aims to please hardcore fans of massive monster versus robot fights. Those seeking any depth in their action films, better look elsewhere.

But thats the sort of movie Pacific Rim Uprising is; unambitious, inconsequential, and in the end, utterly unmemorable. But never outright terrible. You see, from the very first scene, its quite evident that debutant director, Steven S DeKnight, is not trying to replicate del Toros rather inimitable style – Uprising is a brighter, louder, and for the lack of a better word, more dumbed down version of the first movie. But what it doesnt deliver in terms of sheer density of imagination, it more than makes up for in pure spectacle – which was arguably the biggest problem fans had with the first film.

The survival of the world, of course, is at stake €” if you can care for a world that barely stirs outside scrapyards containing discarded robots, or outside laboratories where more of those are continuously churned out. A lot of reasons are offered for this exercise, with characters talking alternatively English and Mandarin, but really all you need to know is that giant robots called Jaegers once fought giant monsters called Kaijus, who may or may not return (but of course they will). Hence, we must have many trained men and women €œpilots€ ready, at all times, to get into those robot boots to fight the good fight.
