In the end Paltan is way too long and also frequently boring. The big war scene all sound and fury is saved for the films climax, and Dutta sticks to his tried-and-tested formula of ending the film with a soulful Sonu Nigam track over images that convey the real casualties of war. But its no Sandese aate hain, and although you do choke up its unlikely that the film or its characters will stay with you even until you reach your car.Im going with a generous two out of five for Paltan. Its got a tired, recycled feel to it, and fails to hold up to Duttas better films.

But with movies, sweat doesnt automatically translate into compelling storytelling. For most of its running length, Paltan is structurally clumsy, bland and flat-out tedious. Largely because Dutta, who has also written the film, isnt interested in creating flesh-and-blood characters. He wants to make a point about the courage it takes to defend the nation and the sacrifices that are made by these men and their families so the rest of us can sleep in peace.

On the whole, Paltan lacks the excitement, emotional quotient and patriotic appeal of a war film and looks like a formula film. It will not be able to make much of a mark at the box-office.

However, Paltan manages to undo some of the damage in its final moments that are truly action packed. Director JP Dutta fires all his ammo in a rousing climax for a bitter sweet victory.

It is clear Dutta has nothing new to say after his 1997 hit, Border, which took a few stars and made them look good in uniform. For the record, Id still gladly salute and take orders from Shroff, a relic of the old film who is largely wasted here. There is a lot to be said about the futility of war, and now Dutta has made his case for the futility of the war movie.

On the whole, PALTAN not only enlightens viewers about a lost chapter in history but also entertains viewers while doing so. Though the buzz is limited, a good word of mouth can definitely help the film.

The take away from Director JP Duttas long-winded drama, Paltan, is that wars are an exercise in futility. But the bigger lesson is that no good comes out of making films that chronicle those crucial bloody episodes. Paltan is a dangerously bland film with limited action. Watch this if only if you are a fan of conflict-driven films, otherwise the casualty could be your patience.

Nothing is subtle in Paltan, everything is in your face. The director gets overly patriotic while shooting the war scenesThe film tries too hard to recreate the magic of Border. But don’t go to the theatres expecting another Border, as even JP Dutta cannot recreate his classic. Paltan is a priceless attempt at documenting a story that needs to be shared but fails in execution. Maybe if the film would have released last month during India’s Independence Day celebrations, it would have worked better.

Paltan is no Border as history cannot be recreated. It could have been a better watch if JP Dutta would have left behind the ’90s wala feel’. Watch it only if want to have the taste of India’s heroic history.
