On the surface Panga is the inspiring story of a woman who returns to the sport she abandoned in exchange for domestic bliss. You only have to look closer to recognise that its actually a charming, feel-good film about unconditional love and the true meaning of family.The films big success is in delivering its message without making a big noise about it. Panga is all about its little moments. Its a film about love disguised as a sports-movie. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five. It fills you with hope and warmth. We could all do with that in these times.

It does however get flat in the second half. I think, after so many sports films, including Niteshs own masterful Dangal, Im a little fatigued with training montages and matches. We know that the underdog will eventually win that is the cardinal rule of the sports film. So directors try different ruses to notch up the tension. Here Ashwiny succeeds only partially.Some will argue that Panga is too sanitized and optimistic. The actual struggle of a mother picking up a career again is much harder. Of course it is. But for now, Ill take the warmth and hope that this film offers. I think you should too.

On the whole, Panga is a hit. It has started terribly slow at many places but collections will definitely pick up due to fantastic word of mouth. Women will simply adore the film. It deserves to be exempted from tax not just by the state governments but also by the Central government because the film is a genuine shot in the arm for the women empowerment movement.

I will take this, if it comes with a film that celebrates a woman trying to reclaim her dream, even if it comes sanctioned by family. The film springs to life when Jaya raises her fist, and slaps her thigh: a panga worth taking.

‘Panga’ is a film that honours the endless hours of work that mothers put behind their families and at the same time urges them to never give up on their dreams and to take that second chance. It not only forms an important voice at a time when so many women drop out of the workforce, it is also an extremely well-crafted film. The humor and emotionally charged moments are deliciously balanced and the outcome is motivating and exhilarating. This ode to motherhood and chasing ones dreams is a must watch.

But in the end Panga is an endearing and inspiring tale of a woman’s attempt to reclaim her identity in a world that is content to relegate her as simply a wife and a mother. And for most women clearly that’s not enough. Watch Panga if you enjoy slice-of-life movies with a dash of everyday humour thrown in. Who knows there may be a Jaya waiting to regain her glory days in some of you! And Panga could well be the nudge that many require to shake off their complacency.

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, who captured the toils of motherhood and mathematics in Nil Battey Sannata, delves into a more relatable, selfless stance that a woman takes on having a child. And this is sometimes, as it happens in this story, a self assigned one. In a scene, the films lead is on the verge of giving up on an opportunity because she feels that shes being €œselfish€ and ignorant of her duties as a mother and wife. But this film goes to prove that pursuing ones passion, despite all the factors that act against it, is just as important a virtue.

All said and done, Panga makes a daring comment on women empowerment & how every mother deserves a second chance. Backed with some brilliant performances, it connects you with the drama with some inhibitions.Three stars!
