Its funny that the protagonists of Vishal Bhardwajs new film Pataakha – a pair of bitterly squabbling sisters – are named after flowers, the very emblem of serenity and peace. Ultimately Pataakha feels inconsistent and never fully satisfying. Its a lightweight offering thats got its sparks, but doesnt quite live up to its firecracker name. Im going with two-and-a-half out of five.

On the whole, Pataakha has some appeal for the gentry audience only. Too many four-letter words, too many dialogues in Rajasthani, and lack of justification for the fights will go against its box-office prospects. In other words, its fate at the ticket windows will be poor.

Like 7 Khoon Maaf, which was also based on a short story, Pataakha is a slim story stretched till it snaps. Dipper explains that the sisters are like India and Pakistan, born from the same mother yet constantly at loggerheads. But the metaphor weighs too heavily on the thin narrative. Once the sisters are married, the story alternates between scheming and screaming. The narrative becomes even more repetitive and labored. Its cacophony without juice or magic.

It took me a while to fully get into the film. Why do these sisters look as if they do not bathe for days on end? Their matted hair and unwashed faces distracted me, as did their thick accents which feel faux in the beginning. Why are they fighting in the first place? But soon enough, it is clear that everything is working to a design. Vishal Bharadwajs Pataakha, based on Charan Singh Pathiks short story Do Behnein, has managed to pull off a rousing parable.

Vishal Bhardwaj, as he always does with his films, has tried to put many quirky spins into this comedy. The music is rustic, but very pleasing. He has also provided an interesting background score. During the second half, as the film briefly explores a psychological reason for the sisters tendency to fight, the sci-fi sounding background music adds a delightful touch to the proceedings. But for all its wonderful and creative touches, Pataakha still feels like a story that stretches a short concept, for a little too long.

A rural audience may connect with this sometimes funny, at other times humourless film. However, one must admit that it left me scared, scarred and shivering because of its screechy pitch. I, for one, am grateful that I dont have a sister! Verdict: Watch Pataakha if you like a walk on the dark side. In all fairness, not all cinema can be escapist fare.

PATAAKHA is a black comedy and definitely has its moments. The duration thankfully is controlled, at 136 minutes. The beginning portions are breezy and entertaining. Thankfully, the scenes of physical fights between the sisters are not incorporated every now and then.On the whole, PATAAKHA is a decent entertainer which has its moments but the post-interval portions are quite unconvincing. At the box office, it will need to rely on word of mouth to register decent collections.

Overall Pataakha is very good but it could have been great if the plot was stronger than just a story about two sisters with dreams. However we are not complaining much since it is a full-on entertainer for the masses. And oh, did I mention, Sanya has shown her feminine side in this film and comes out way bolder than Dangal? So it might be the right time to transfer her name from the Dangal girl to the Pataakha.

Pataakha is Vishal Bhardwajs adaptation of a short story by Charan Singh Pathik. In the beginning, it felt a bit flat to me till we get to see what these firecrackers are dreaming about.The delights are in the details. The turns of phrase are rollicking and unassumingly poetic. Badki, appalled by the ticket prices for a new film, wonders if this time Salman Khan €” an actor famous for climactically removing his shirt €” will take his pants off as well. Later, the narrator compares the girls to balloons while calling their nightmares pin-pricks, making them go boom.
