Blending elements of creepy horror, psychological thriller, and black comedy, Ragini MMS director Pavan Kripalani whips up a surprisingly potent cocktail in the form of Phobia. The film is smart and reasonably slick, and benefits considerably from a knockout performance by Radhika Apte, even if the script isnt always on solid ground.I found myself chuckling at the end of the film, which is not usually the response one tends to have to a thriller. But Phobia is no standard thriller. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five. Dont miss it.

On the whole, Phobia is a fairly entertaining fare but quite unpalatable as it does not tread the logical path. It also suffers from two major drawbacks an uncommon word (for the non-English-speaking audience) as the title and a difficult-to-understand suspense. It will, therefore, fail to make any mark at the ticket windows.

A horror flick set in an empty apartment in which things go bump, using standard, familiar tropes, and still able to create freshness? It is a tough ask, but `Phobia pulls it off with pizazz, helped by a crackerjack plot and performances. Phobia is a genuinely frightener, so far away from those unintentionally comic monstrosities it keeps slinging out, that you feel like cheering. Keep your eyes slitted, and be on your guard, because something wicked this way comes.

The film makes no pretenses. The point blank title gives away its plot. And yet, it is cleverly deceptive, leaving you in the lurch guessing what happens next. From gloomy paintings to old diaries and a forsaken vintage ring, there is mystery in everything.  The only downside is that the writers fail to see the script till the end. In the second half, its flow gets restless. The chills are fewer and logic lapses are too many. But these are minor glitches in this thrilling fare. In the end, Phobia is an unnerving movie that plays skillfully on the fear of the unknown.

Having said that, Phobia is undeniably a well-made thriller worth watching only in theatres. Kripalani does a fine job as director and gives us a compelling narrative which may not appease to the regular Bollywood audience. But if you love the thrills and heebie-jeebies, then Phobia is for YOU!

Phobia is a taut and evocatively filmed psychological thriller about a woman whose mind plays terrible tricks on her, but it is equally about the hostile, predatory world that she is a part of and feels threatened by. So her battle with the demons within mirror her fight with the ones that haunt her outside.Phobia is a canny flick that places known genre conventions in fresh light, the kind that bestows new life on them. Watch this film for the many surprises it springs and, of course, for Radhika Apte in full flow.

On the whole, PHOBIA is a well-made taut thriller with an amazing performance by Radhika Apte. However the in film blood and gore may not be to everyone’s liking affecting the film’s overall box office prospects as it will appeal to a rather niche audience. Another factor that may affect the film is the low key promotion of the film due to which many people aren’t aware of PHOBIA’s release. But for them who have an appetite for the unconventional thrills and psychological mind games, don’t miss PHOBIA.

Phobia had the potential of being one of those rare Bollywood psychological thrillers that you can proudly recommend to your friends. A genuinely claustrophobic first half and Radhika Aptes fantastic performance were its aces. However the limp second half only demotes its status to a decent thriller.
