Pihu, a film about a two-year-old girl tottering about unsupervised in a high-rise apartment, appears to have been made specifically with the intention of traumatising the viewer. This is no cutesy Home Alone-style comedy; this is a horror film.But the movie doesnt ultimately work because theres no point to it. Its neither a compelling cautionary tale about bad parenting or a sufficiently responsible thriller. The film revels in making you flinch and squirm and cringe. Thats just mean-spirited. Im going with two out of five.

Pihu is Trapped meets Home Alone without the anguish or the humour. A toddler, Pihu, wakes up next to her inert mother. Her father is not at home. Pihu shoves and calls and cries but her mom wont open her eyes. It is now up to the two-year-old to survive the horrors of a modern high-rise apartment. This includes a microwave, a steam iron, a geyser, broken glass, floor cleaning fluid, a balcony you get the drift.In the beginning, I was worried sick about Pihu this is basically every parents nightmare but that quickly gave way to exhaustion. The script is so visibly manipulative that its difficult to stay invested. Im going with two stars.

Who would want to watch a baby cry? Nobody, and thats what dooms Vinod Kapris silly and sadistic film Pihu, where a little girl walks precariously around an apartment without being watched or cared for. The idea €” of anything in a house being a potential threat €” could have been made into a watchable short film, but this is feature-length torture, where the viewer is made aware that they must sit through more than ninety minutes of a helpless and endangered child, despite knowing that nothing can really happen to her before the end.

Kapri intelligently uses all these situations as if he is dealing with a well-groomed actor. You dont want the kid to die as she nears a naked wire or looks intriguingly towards sleeping pills. The film sometimes feels stretched but then you can never know how a kid would react in similar circumstances, can you? Pihu is all about a situation which may go haywire and its success lies in the fact that you dont want it to end as a tragedy. Youre on Pihus side.At 96-minutes, Pihu grips you by the neck and doesnt let your bat an eyelid. However, it could have helped a whole lot if it had a tighter second half.

This unusual thriller has all the elements you’d expect from a film that can attain cult status. In all fairness, the story does throw up a few nail-biting moments, too. But the inconsistent writing and direction by Vinod Kapri robs the movie of its desired impact. With a little more attention to detail and conviction, this one could have been a terrific experience.

Kapri deserves applause for the manner in which he has directed her without needlessly trying to underline her cuteness. At no point does she appear to be acting. And Ms Vishwakarma is such a darling that it is impossible not to be invested in Pihu from the moment the camera first zeroes in on her. I found myself occasionally smiling at her antics, in awe of her inventiveness, charmed by her apparently spontaneous reactions to her dilemmas and confusions, admiring Kapri’s ability to capture all this, and clenching my fists out of concern for her welfare, so paralysed with fear for her that I could not look away from the screen till the very last second of the film. Now excuse me while I get my blood pressure examined by my doc.
