PLAYING FOR KEEPS  MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2/5  Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

How anyone can rope in so many charming actors and yet make such an unremarkable film is the one single thought thats going through your head as you watch Playing For Keeps. This inoffensive but formulaic romantic comedy squanders away the talents of its s**y cast by trapping them in such a predictable script. The films only genuine moments are the ones between Butler and the kid (Noah Lomax), who have a warm and believable chemistry together. Im going with two out of five for Playing For Keeps. Its not a terrible film, it isnt unwatchable either. Its just dull. And thats a shame given all the talent involved.

Playing for Keeps is a decent one-time watch only for the very gorgeous Gerard Butler. The film not only revolves around but also depends solely on his ‘s** appeal’ and it scores there. On the flipside, the rom-com/chick-flick is way too formulaic, cliched and predictable for your liking. Various women get cozy with George but there is no surprise element as to who gets him. There is no drama or twists andturns to the story. You don’t sympathize with poor chick-magnet George. A lack of depth to the characters makes you feel indifferent towards them. The bonding between the father and son is not explored much either. If you don’t dig novelty in films and fancy Butler, Playing for Keeps is watchable.

Playing For Keeps is a big collection of talent involved in a strikingly below average piece of work. From the stellar cast to the director who gave us masterpieces like The Pursuit Of Happiness, this movie is full of gifted individuals. Its mind boggling how all these brilliant artists couldnt see through the ordinary plot. It would have saved the audiences a trip to the theatres. All in all, it is just a very lazily made film even by rom-com standards. Verdict: Disappointing plot and lazy execution- avoidable.

While being an awfully predictable by-the-book romance, Playing for Keeps lacks the emotional resonance which is crucial to such an endeavour. Thanks to the writing and his acting, Butler, whom none can identify with, fails to inspire any admiration or sympathy.Avoid insipid mellow-drama Playing for Keeps. It is unoriginal, uninteresting and unengaging.
