Its no fault of the cast; Justice Smith is pretty good as Tim Goodman, but we dont feel as much for his quest even though it is integral to the plot. The same can easily be said about the rest of the humans. Fortunately, the world of Ryme City is so well realised as a place that captures your imagination, making you wish it existed. The production design and visual effects are virtually seamless, and never take you out of the film, which is a massive advantage. Whether thats enough to distract you from a clumsy plot and screenplay, depends on how much of a fan you are of the franchise. But Reynolds and director Rob Letterman manage to keep you entertained enough in this fun popcorn film, and might just be enough to convert young non-fans into Pok©mon trainers.

On paper, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu had the makings of a true disaster. But in execution, it comes across as a minor miracle; not a fluke, by any standard, and certainly way better than it has any right to be. It has that innocent sense of wonder that Id imagine would be very appealing to children, and a self-aware wisdom thatll hit older fans right in the jellies. There is no way it shouldve worked, but it does.

The story is incredibly corny and predictable, but Reynolds makes it work. The movie begins with Tim Goodman who works in an insurance company. He receives news that his estranged father Harry Goodman has passed away in an accident. He goes to his fathers place to take care of things, and encounters a Pikachu. Only Tim can understand this Pikachus language. To others, he sounds like every other Pikachu. The Pikachu tells Tim that his master Harry Goodman may still be alive. The two join forces (Goodman quite reluctantly) to find out what happened to Harry.

It’s got an adorable hero from an iconic media brand who is voiced by a proven box office master at snark. But, somehow, “Pok©mon Detective Pikachu” never really gets arresting. A neutered Ryan Reynolds tries hard but can’t make this live action-meets-animated movie gel. It’s plodding and listless and really not funny or smart enough. Turns out, you can’t copy “Deadpool” tricks for the PG set.
