PRISONERS ENGLISH MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:4/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: Masand’s Verdict :CNN IBN

Although cut from the same cloth as such fine procedurals as David Fincher’s Zodiac and the multiple Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs, Prisoners feels closer in spirit to Ben Affleck’s terrific directorial debut Gone Baby Gone. Like that film, this is also a labyrinthine story about the search for kidnapped children that leaves you to ponder over a crucial moral issue. Despite an overlong final act, Prisoners is a remarkable exploration of characters under pressure. Packed with surprising twists, it keeps you guessing until the end. I’m going with four out of five. Don’t miss it.

The violence isn’t glamourised, but looks as real as possible and therefore, sometimes disturbing. Most visual cues are suggested, but are never overt. A film with many emotional components, the visceral panic, desperation and helplessness any parent would feel when their children are abducted, forms its bedrock. Each watershed point takes its own time to build. This ensures that you will want to pay attention to the details that makes Prisoners so enjoyable. Note: You may not like this film if you don’t enjoy dark thrillers that touch on morality issues.

Prisoners is a tight psychological thriller that weaves a superb story of kidnapping layering it with so many different emotional twists and turns that you stay with the protagonist till the end. Villeneuve manages to create a uniform tone to the film till the very end. The suspense and thrill is real. Also dialogues and the interactions between the families is so heart felt that you want them to triumph and find their toddlers.Prisoners is a tight gripping thriller that will engage you from the very first frame.

When good and bad come into battle, who wins? But before that, what is good and what is bad? The answer for these question has left many a thinkers baffled and confused. Prisoners falls in that rare category of films that seeks to give an answer to these unanswerable questions with utmost neutrality and without sounding preachy. A twisted film like this is sure to leave a lasting impression. If you watched The Frozen Ground and thought it was a classy crime-thriller, watch Prisoners and you will be numbed. The film is easily one of the most disturbing films of the year.
