Roughly 15 minutes into Mira Nairs new film Queen of Katwe, and your defenses are down. Good luck trying to resist the charms of this uplifting true-life drama. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Queen of Katwe. The blatant sports-movie clich©s aside, this is a genuinely moving film with winning performances.

Queen Of Katwe is, as I said earlier, a film about realisation. About a coach’s realisation that his pupil is far too many moves ahead. About a mother’s hand-on-mouth realisation that she is finally home.About a striking young woman, one who looks like she walked out of a poem, and how she feels her poise and grace fade away as it dawns on her that the girl sitting across from her is special. And about that young girl understanding what a pawn can become if it marches far enough.Comprehension is a beautiful thing.

Queen of Katwe is a stirring account of human resilience that survives its saturated and sun-flooded look, its cheery tone and the bumper-sticker dialogue. Nair ensures that a story of unlikely triumph is a local affair. The queen wins on her terms, and nowhere is Uganda portrayed as a basket case in need of foreign assistance and endorsement.
