On the whole, Raksha Bandhan is for the small centres mainly. While it will appeal to the families, women and masses in small centres, it will not find as much favour with the youth, classes and audiences in the big cities. As far as business is concerned, it will, therefore, not be able to do much. Business in circuits like U.P., Bihar and C.P.C.I. Rajasthan will be better than in other circuits. It must be added that in the final tally, its business will be more than its merits because of the first eight-day week which is full of additional holidays

Let us get this out of the way without mincing words: Aanand L. Rai’s Raksha Bandhan has no business to exist in this day and age. It is a shockingly regressive family drama that would have us believe that girls are worth nothing if they are not married and domesticated.Raksha Bandhan is so, so yesterday in both substance and spirit that it could be passed off as a soggy 1950s film that has wended its way through the decades to land in our midst for no rhyme or reason.

Himanshu Sharma & Kanika Dhillons regressive approach to the story isnt the only issue with the film, its also the extremely over-the-top treatment given to its narrative. It feels like an old soul trapped in a young body at places. All said and done, Raksha Bandhan celebrates all right things in the end, but its the journey to that celebration that doesnt really intrigue you to stay invested.

Raksha Bandhan reflects the stories of people from small-town India, and in that effort, it does entertain especially in the first half. However, the story about bandhan between siblings soon turns into a social commentary about dowry, which takes up a lot of screentime of this 110-minute movie. This highly emotional drama doesnt fail to touch you, but it had the potential to be a far more entertaining watch.

Im not sure what made me more uncomfortable €” the mothballed plot detailing, the contrivances, the high-pitched melodrama which used to be part and parcel of movies we thought we had deep-sixed decades back; or the conviction that low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness, hugely popular at one time, is the way out for a beleaguered Bollywood.

On the whole, RAKSHA BANDHAN is a touching family saga, with a highly emotional second half that uplifts the film. At the box office, it has the potential of attracting family audiences to cinema halls, especially in the Hindi belt and mass centres. The five-day extended holiday period is an additional bonus. It deserves a tax exemption for its social message.

The script needed to be tighter. The first part definitely needed better editing, and parts of the latter half needed more attention, especially after the climax. Like mentioned before, this is one of the simplest films, so even Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon have written a fairly straightforward story. All in all, it is one of those films that you can watch with the entire family, as they come together for Raksha Bandhan. Moreover, it will make you laugh and cry in equal parts. And while it has its fair share of flaws, watch it for the simplicity, and for Akshay and Bhumis performance.
