Rashmi Rocket is a bit of a muddle. The film is situated between fact and fiction. Director Akarsh Khurana, his team of writers and leading lady Taapsee Pannu are trying to translate a complex, little-known subject into accessible and entertaining cinema. The attempt is well-intentioned and brave but not entirely successful. For one, the film about an unconventional woman is far too conventional. But the writing falters when it comes to the plotting of Rashmis rise and fall. The film resorts to cliches such as an upper-class rival. And of course, the training montage.Its half-baked moments like this that stop Rashmi Rocket from taking flight.

On the whole, Rashmi Rocket is an extremely interesting and entertaining fare for the family audience. Had the film released in the cinemas, it would have opened slow but collections would have definitely picked up by tremendously positive word of mouth. Of course, it has its limitations as it is devoid of ingredients like romance, dance, comedy, etc. but having said that, it must be added that it is a very enjoyable fare. It also has special appeal for the ladies audience.

Unlike other sports dramas, Rashmi Rocket isnt just about that one make or break game in the climax. But still, Nanda Periyasamys riveting story, Aniruddha Guhas sharp screenplay and Akarsh Khuranas able direction, holds your attention right from the beginning until the end, where the race for justice is played out in a court. With powerful performances Rashmi Rocket fires on all cylinders and stays the course of informing, entertaining and educating its audience about an archaic practice that should be left far behind in the race against inequality and bias.

On the whole, RASHMI ROCKET tackles an important issue and is laced with a powerful performance by Taapsee Pannu. The movie will need a strong word of mouth as the lack of buzz around the film might prove to be a dampener to an extent.

Its not just the push-and-pull of keeping it grounded while ratcheting the high drama quotient. You also have to get past the film throwing constructed spanners in the works: often a flimsy scene or situation feels inserted, or a dialogue underlined, and the incessant background music keeps calling attention to itself. A few eye-roll moments threaten to derail things: why would a pregnant couple, having heard a doctor saying thoda risk hai go out and do the exact thing that has been deemed risky? But then you return to Rashmi fighting the good fight, for herself and for other athletes who have been done against in similar fashion, and you want to cheer. For keeping sporting women on top, and for the very worthy cause.

I do wish Rashmi Rocket had dwelt at length on caste and class privilege while assessing the €œlevel playing field€ that athletics federations long claimed they hoped to achieve for women by eliminating women athletes with high testosterone levels from competitions. Still, the film ends up planting the seeds of other thoughts in the audiences minds, including the realisation echoed by what Bruce Kidd, a former long-distance Olympic runner, told NYT, €œthat Olympians themselves sometimes joke that theyre all freaks of nature€. What then is €œnormal€ and €œnatural€? That Rashmi Rocket raises that question and sustains a conversation on it right till the end makes it a commendable and significant film.

For casual fans of sport, who may not be aware of the Dutee Chand case and the issue of hypoandrogenism in sport, Rashmi Rocket is a good starting point. But the film lacks depth and grit. At a time when athletes are pushing boundaries of their scope of influence, Rashmi Rocket is politically correct without being enlightening.
