So we reach the latest (prior to the upcoming release of the new Captain America movie) film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the 2015 Ant Man.

Directed by Peyton Reed (Yes Man, The Break Up, Down with Love), the film has a screenplay that was written by the group of Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), Joe Cornish, Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Big Short etc) and the film’s lead actor Paul Rudd. The background to the assorted screenplay credits is that Wright was due to direct the film having co-written a script with Cornish, however left the project in 2014 (apparently down to creative differences) and Reed stepped in with re-writes for the script coming from McKay and Rudd.

Rudd plays Scott Lang, a talented cat burglar, electrical engineer, and recency released prison inmate having served 2 years for theft.  Drawn back into the world of burglary for last job, he finds himself breaking into the safe of Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and beginning a journey towards becoming ‘Ant Man’.

Pym is a talented scientist,  former member of Shield, and discoverer of the ‘Pym particle’  – a way in which matter can be shrunk, the basis for his invention of the Ant Man suit.

Through teaming up with Pym and his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lily), they plan to thwart the attempts of Darren Cross, a former mentee of Pym and a man obsessed with recreating the particle, in order to weaponise it.

Marvel once again deliver a thoroughly enjoyable tale with a mix of humour, and comic book action, this time with a heist movie narrative. Rudd is a charismatic lead and Stall thoroughly lets loose as the villain of the tale. Its not earth shattering and needs you to just ‘go with the science’ but thats nothing too new in the MCU.
