We’re back off to the Lego Universe now for the review of the Lego Batman film that is currently out in the cinema.

The second Lego film to have come out after 2014’s The Lego Movie, Chris McKay (who was an animation director on the 2014 film) now takes on his full directorial debut. The screenplay is by a number of people including Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, all based on a story by Grahame-Smith.

Centring on the caped crusader himself, the film delves into the world of Batman and his inability to develop relationships – even with the Joker who sees himself as Batman’s arch enemy.

However, things all start to change when Commissioner Gordon announces his retirement, the Joker hatches a plan to force Batman to start to appreciate him, and Bruce Wayne accidentally adopts a young orphan. All whilst Alfred is attempting him to try and build relationships with people.

Will Arnett stars as Batman, and there are celebrities a plenty through the film that include Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes and Billy Dee Williams.

The film works hard to entertain children and parents alike and largely pulls it off albeit with it all starting to wear a little thin towards the end. It lacks the originality of the Lego Movie (but that’s no surprise) but it’s a great combination of humour pointing at the genre of superhero films.
