Fast on the heels of lead actress Bree Larson’s win as best actress in the recent Oscars we now turn our focus to the 2015 film Room which earned her that award.

The film is directed by Lenny Abrahamson, whose most notable previous work was the 2014 Frank starring Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson.

Based on the 2010 novel of the same name by writer Emma Donoghue, who also provided the screenplay for the film, the film tell the story of a young mother and her son who are being held against their will in a single room.

The child ‘Jack’ and his Ma, are celebrating his fifth birthday as the film opens and we follow the two as the story unfurls.

I’m intentionally holding off anymore details of the story as I found that knowing so little made the story far more compelling.  Keep your knowledge of the film to a minimum, and then go and see it.

The reason for that is, it’s a remarkable piece of cinema. Its story is both troubling and inspiring, haunting and compelling.

Larson is incredible in the film and her performance warrants all of the recognition that it garnered during the award season.  Additional credit also to young actor Jacob Tremblay who also delivers a remarkable performance.
