RIDDICK MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Renuka VyavahareSite:Times Of India (TOI)

Riddick solely relies on the bald & beefy Diesel’s macho appearance and deep-raspy voice. No effort has gone into penning a substantial screenplay or making the visual effects look better. Dark visuals of barren, lifeless planet fail to create the desired impact. Nothing really instills fear. We wonder if even fans of the franchise, had high expectations from this sequel, given the mediocrity of the previous film (The Chronicles of Riddick). Everything about the film looks as artificial as the glowing-eyes of its central character, barring the cool bikes. Overall, Riddick fails to engage you.

Disappointingly, the threequel doesnt break through the tried-and-tested genre formula. The stop-go plot comes up short in the thrills-and-fun department. This time around, the eponymous protagonist is betrayed and left for dead on a desolate planet. He must not only ward off an army of alien predators but also use his survival skills to vanquish a group of bounty hunters. The largely wordless first half-hour or so is fairly engrossing. Unfortunately, the rest of the film plays out predictably, with credibility thrown off along with any feeling of foreboding.

The makers put all their eggs in one basket Vin Diesel. If there was a side kick or a novel supporting character maybe it wouldnt have felt so weary. Also the production quality isnt that great. It looks brilliant in some scenes and terrible in others. The dialogues are ridiculously over the top, cheesy and at times embarrassing. Given the fact that the first two films really didnt make any big dent, the third should have been made with greater enthusiasm.Wait for the DVD, Riddick fails to wow us with his super powers.

‘Riddick’ works when it isnt trying to be like the first film or isnt dabbling in misogyny. The action is fun, and the raw gritty hard science fiction aspect of it is a nice change from flimsy fare like ‘Oblivion’. The creatures though limited in variety are quite imaginative, and theres even an alien dog to give Riddick company. But thats about it.
