For his unstinting service to science and the country, Narayanan was accused of espionage in 1994 and subjected to custodial torture by Intelligence Bureau (IB) officers. His wife went into shock and even his children were attacked. Eventually, the Supreme Court acquitted him and in 2019, he was awarded a Padma Bhushan. But the perpetrators of this treachery were never found. A mans life was horrifically derailed and to date, no one knows exactly why. Rocketry: the Nambi Effect hints that it might have been an international conspiracy, which explains the films tag line €” €œSometimes, a man wronged is a nation wronged.€ Its a true story so astounding that no film writer could make it up.

On the whole, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is a film with good intentions but it is very class-appealing. It has little for the masses as its technical jargon will make it difficult for them to understand and enjoy the drama. Having said that, it must be added that the film will win a lot of critical acclaim.

Part hagiography, part tearjerker, Rocketry – The Nambi Effect is a missed opportunity of a massive magnitude. The real-life story of a brilliant and enterprising rocket scientist who was implicated in a false espionage case at the height of his career could have been parlayed into a solid drama and an engaging character study. The film, owing to the facile, disappointingly conventional nature of the storytelling, is neither.

Apart from telling an important story based on facts, the film beautifully weaves in tales of love and friendship, which will sure to have the audience hooked to the screen. The film is a must-watch to know about the details of Dr Nambi Narayanan and his life and get educated about an important aspect of Indias history.

But the stronger second half gives us the episodes of Nambi being arrested on false charges of selling the nation’s secrets and being accused as a traitor, which leads to unfair imprisonment, third-degree treatments at the hands of cops and being shunned by the society. The film doesn’t go too deep into the scientist’s attempts to clear his name, and instead focuses more on the emotional fallout of the accusation on him and his family. This approach turns Rocketry into a sentimental drama, which feels like a rather safe choice, given that the story offers scope for it to be an edgier film – a cautionary thriller on how, in our country, even those with the best intentions can instantly be vilified due to abuse of power.

Nambi Narayanan is a man who deserves to be celebrated and the film does just that. It does not only highlight his achievements, it also discusses his shortcomings, which makes Rocketry a worthy watch. Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is a film that could have been a phenomenal watch. Despite the shortcomings, the story of Nambi Narayanan makes it a decent watch.

Rocketry is a movie that must be celebrated because an artist has tried to come out of his comfort zone and tell a story not many could dare. It is about a man who gave this country big achievements but was compensated with brutality. It took almost two decades for the government to give a veteran scientist a clean chit in a case he was never guilty of. It is a story that must be told and heard!
